Joseph Haydn – jeden z trójki klasyków wiedeńskich (obok Mozarta i Beethovena) pracował na dworze Esterházych przez blisko 30 lat. Na początku był drugim kapelmistrzem po G.J. Wernerze. Po 1766 roku Haydn został jedynym kapelmistrzem, wtedy zmarł Gregor Joseph Werner. W tym samym roku Haydn napisał "Missa cellensis", dzieło o ogromnych rozmiarach, które po utracie zapisu nutowego w pożarze napisał od podstaw raz jeszcze w 1773. Jego pełna nazwa brzmi "Missa cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae", znana również jako "Cäcilien-Messe". Prapremiera miała miejsce w kościele w Mariazell, w austriackiej Styrii.

Piękne, wręcz błyskotliwe wykonanie RIAS Kammerchor i Akademie für Alte Musik, pełne jest wyrazistych kontrastów. Justin Doyle prowadzi oba zespoły z gracją, wydobywając na powierzchnię nieomal operową energię jednego z najbardziej imponujących dzieł kościelnych tego kompozytora.

It was when the young Haydn was appointed Kapellmeister to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy that he composed his Missa Cellensis, a work of vast proportions, whose popularity is demonstrated by the many surviving copies. In this interpretation full of vivid contrasts, the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik confirm their extraordinary ability to reveal every subtlety of a composition that possesses almost operatic energy.
