William Christie to jeden z najsłynniejszych interpretatorów muzyki dawnej, wspaniały, wszechstronny dyrygent o amerykańsko-francuskich korzeniach. Urodził się w Buffalo, studiował grę na fortepianie, organach i klawesynie. Poznał Ralpha Kirkpatricka, który zaszczepił w nim zamiłowanie do muzyki francuskiej. Na stałe przyjechał do Paryża w 1971. Kontynuował naukę gry na klawesynie u Kennetha Gilberta i Dawida Fullera.

Od 1979 jego kariera nabrała rozpędu przy współpracy z Les Arts Florissants. Wraz z grupą skupił się głównie na wykonywaniu muzyki angielskiej, francuskiej i włoskiej XVII i XVIII wieku. Przyczynił się do popularyzacji muzyki francuskiej tego okresu. Christie był regularnie zapraszany przez wielkie orkiestry do współpracy, dwukrotnie brał udział w festiwalu w Glyndebourne z operami Georga Friedricha Händla: Theodora w 1996 i Rodelinda w 1998. Jednak główny nurt jego działalności stanowi wykonywanie muzyki francuskiej, takich kompozytorów jak Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Jean-Philippe Rameau, François Couperin.

Płyta ta otwiera nową serię w katalogu francuskiej wytwórni Harmonia Mundi prezentującą nagraniowy dorobek Williama Christie wraz z Les Arts Florissants. Tu nie ma słabego nagrania, a każde kolejne wydawnictwo jest interpretacyjną i edytorską perełką.

With this anthology of 'airs sérieux' and 'airs a boire' of the Grand Siecle, Les Arts Florissants launches a new series on harmonia mundi. We can listen to the tracks on this disc as contemporaries turned the pages of successful collections of songs, alternating between invocations to Bacchus and invitations to love. Around William Christie at the harpsichord and his musicians, five singers offer multiple combinations of close-knit voices.
