Excerpt from liner notes
'Andrzej Panufnik was Poland's senior composer of the post-War decade, his stature comparable to that of Shostakovich in Russia. The fate of his music was perhaps dealt an irreparable blow when in 1954 he fled to the West in protest against Stalinist controls over creative artists. The Communist world expunged his name and music for over two decades, whilst his chosen country of expatriation, England, was characteristically indifferent to its latest immigrant composer. At one point Panufnik even considered reviving his fortunes in America, where Leopold Stokowski had championed his works. Gradually, however, his fastidiously wrought and exceptionally candid music garnered international performances and acclaim, although it has suffered an undue lack of exposure in our concert halls...'
