Editor's Info:
This third recording of the collection qb presents Clemens Merkel, violinist of Quatuor Bozzini, in l'hiver monastique - 70 consolations harmoniques by Montréal composer Michael Oesterle. It is a monologue, an uninterupted line, one long breath. A unique collaboration between 3 distinct musical individuals: composer, performer, and Tonmeister. Ritual, order, balance as the elements of monastic life and compositional creation draw a parallel between the order of monks and the order of music each living within a network of highly organized cells. l'hiver monastiqueuses simple numeric permutations outlined as musical harmonies and expressed in a series of patterns to create a representation of Monastic life. The monastic silence is echoed by the continuous sound of the violin, a single focus which permits no personal interruptions. l'hiver monastique was recorded between January 5 and 12, 2001 at the Hôtellerie St. Norbert (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Now a heritage site, the Hôtellerie St. Norbert was built in 1892 by the Trappist monks of Notre-Dame des Prairies. The site provided the Trappists with tranquility and sustenance for their lives of prayer and manual labour. The Hôtellerie is now the home of the St. Norbert Arts Center. Many thanks to Peter Hecker and Christine Unger for their wonderful collaboration, invaluable input and support with this project.
