Sigiswald Kuijken – belgijski dyrygent, skrzypek i altowiolista grający na autentycznych instrumentach z epoki, jedna z najważniejszych postaci świata muzyki dawnej i pokolenia odkrywającego zasady historycznego wykonawstwa.
Ceniona oficyna wydawnicza Challenge Classics wznowiła właśnie epokowe nagranie arcydzieła Jana Sebastiana Bacha - jego Pasji według św. Mateusza, która doceniona została dopiero po śmierci kompozytora. Niesamowite jest, że zapracowany zwykle lipski kantor napisał to oratorium bez żadnego zamówienia, bowiem w kościele luterańskim, czas Wielkiego Postu jest w liturgii luterańskiej czasem bez muzyki (z wyjątkiem Zwiastowania Pańskiego). Narracja Pasji jest bardzo dynamiczna, ma charakter dramatyczny. Odczytanie Sigiswalda Kuijkena i jego La Petite Bande, poza mistrzostwem wykonawczym odkrywa przed słuchaczem także wielki potencjał teatralny tego arcydzieła.

La Petite Bande Został założony w 1972 roku przez Sigiswalda Kuijkena, na prośbę firmy płytowej Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, w celu nagrania "Mieszczanina szlachcicem" J.B.Lully’ego pod dyrekcją Gustava Leonhardta. La Petite Bande wzięła swoją nazwę od orkiestry Lully’ego, która działała na dworze Ludwika XIV. Sukces pierwszego nagrania sprawił, że zespół zaczął regularnie koncertować. Jego repertuar skupiał się początkowo na muzyce francuskiej, ale w ciągu lat został poszerzony o działa mistrzów włoskich oraz Bacha, Haendla, Glucka i Mozarta.

Sigiswald Kuijken urodził się w 1944 w okolicy Brukseli. Studiował grę na skrzypcach w konserwatoriach w Brukseli i Brugii m.in. pod kierunkiem Maurice’a Raskina. Samodzielnie zdobył obszerną wiedzę na temat siedemnasto i osiemnasto-wiecznych technik wykonawczych i zwyczajów interpretacji w zakresie gry na skrzypcach i wioli da gamba.
W latach 1964 - 1972 roku był członkiem zespołu Alarius Ensemble (z Wielandem Kuijkenem, Robertem Kohnenem i Janine Rubinlicht). Zespół koncertował w wielu krajach europejskich oraz Stanach Zjednoczonych.
Sigiswald Kuijken stopniowo angażował się w pojedyncze projekty w zakresie muzyki kameralnej z licznymi specjalistami zajmującymi się muzyką barokową. Współpracował z takimi artystami jak: Wieland Kuijken, Bartold Kuijken, Robert Kohnen, Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Bruggen, Anner Bylsma i René Jacobs.
W 1972 roku, przy wsparciu Deutsche Harmonia Mundi i Gustava Leonhardta, założył orkiestrę barokową „La Petite Bande”, która od tego czasu dała niezliczoną ilość koncertów w Europie, Australii, Ameryce Południowej, Chinach i Japonii oraz dokonała wielu nagrań dla różnych wytwórni płytowych (m.in. Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Seon, Virgin, Accent, Denon czy Hyperion).
W 1986 roku artysta założył String Quartet (z François Fernandezem, Marleen Thiers i Wielandem Kuijkenem), który specjalizuje się w wykonywaniu kwartetów i kwintetów (w tym przypadku partię pierwszych skrzypiec realizuje Ryo Terakado) okresu klasycznego. Nagrania kwartetów i kwintetów Haydna oraz Mozarta, w wykonaniu tych muzyków, wydała wytwórnia Denon. Za osiągnięcia życia artysta został nagrodzony prestiżową nagrodą rządu flamandzkiego "Life Achievement Award of the Flemish Government".

Magnificent and transparent, a recording of the famous masterpiece by J.S. Bach by La Petite Bande and Sigiswald Kuijken. The ensemble has a worldwide reputation of aiming for the most authentic sound possible. Again Kuijken and his group of musicians and vocalists have achieved this the most sublime way!

Sigiswald Kuijken knows the St. Matthew Passion through and through. With La Petite Bande he gave performances of the work all over the world. Twenty years ago La Petite Bande (at that time with conductor Gustav Leonhardt and Kuijken as concertmaster) made their first recording of the Passion. It was a recording with soloists, a chamberchoir and an orchestral composition which was adjusted to that. Since then Kuijken's vision on this masterpiece has changed very much. Ground-breaking musicological work of the last decades has brought him to a serious thin-out of his ensemble without the use of a conductor. There is not a real choir anymore, because the soloists perform also the choirparts. The boyschoir that is usually used in most performances of this Passion is replaced here by a single soprano voice!

Additionally, by using authentic instruments and the original way of playing them, both in interpretation and sound quality, La Petite Bande strives to revive baroque music as faithfully as possible without lapsing into rigid academics.
