Themes and improvisations for two basses. At the time when they made this album, Phillips and Dave Holland were key members of two of the most important groups in contemporary jazz. Phillips was working with the group called just the Trio with John Surman and Stu Martin, and Holland with the group Circle with Chick Corea and Anthony Braxton (In fact, Circle's legendary "Paris Concert" was recorded just one week after "Music for Two Basses".) The idea for a two bass album emerged when Manfred Eicher heard the players improvising together between sets at Hamburg radio. This was the first album of bass duos ever issued and the material stands up very well. Holland's tender "Song for Clare" is a piece he returned to several times in his career. The improvising throughout is exemplary, with Barre Phillips's wonderful arco playing well showcased in the free pieces.


Artist History

Although their careers were to develop in quite different directions, Dave Holland and Barre Phillips moved on overlapping paths in the late Sixties and early Seventies, with Dave succeeding Barre as bassist in John Stevens' Spontaneous Music Ensemble; and Barre replacing Dave in John Surman's groups. The American bassist (Phillips) arrived in Europe to lend his voice to the language of free playing, while soon the British bassist (Holland) would be headed in the opposite direction, working first with Miles Davis and then a succession of American jazz greats from Sam Rivers to Stan Getz, from Betty Carter to Joe Henderson. Dave Holland's own groups, particularly the current quintet (heard on "Not for Nothin'", "Extended Play" etc), have achieved great critical acclaim. He has contributed also to ECM albums with Charles Lloyd, Anouar Brahem, Chick Corea, Kenny Wheeler, George Adams and others.
