Editor's Info:
Fourth ECM album from Evan Parker's endlessly innovative Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, recorded live in Glasgow in November 2004, and taking the group's admixture of controlled free-play and real-time electronic processing to the next level. In the ensemble's pulsating sound world, old demarcations between composition and improvisation, between "real" and electronic instruments, are blurred. Spatial depth in the music expands and contracts, often giving the listener the feeling of free-floating weightlessly in strange atmospheres.

The CD features two pieces, the five-part, sixty minute "Eleventh Hour" with the whole band creating under Parker's direction, and "Shadow Play", on which Parker's soprano sax sounds are brilliantly manipulated by Walter Prati, Lawrence Casserley and Joel Ryan.

Artist Background

English saxophonist Evan Parker was one of the very first musicians to record for ECM, appearing on ECM 1005 with the Music Improvisation Company, a pioneering project bringing electronics and improvisation together in 1970. Since then Parker has become the most influential saxophonist in free improvised music. He has also appeared on ECM recordings with artists ranging from Paul Bley to Kenny Wheeler to Gavin Bryars. Parker formed his Electro-Acoustic Ensemble in 1992 and previous ECM recordings by the group are "Toward The Margins", "Drawn Inward" and "Memory/Vision", all of which have received extremely positive press worldwide. His improvising cohorts in the ensemble - including Wachsmann, Lytton and Fernandez - are all well known players on the European jazz and improvised circuits. But the group has also made inroads into the "contemporary classical" world. In the last few years the group has played both new music and jazz festivals including Donaueschingen, Huddersfield, Ultima in Oslo etc etc.

New to the group is Richard Barrett, the highly regarded British composer, whose recent work includes commissions from the Cikada Ensemble and the BBC Symphony Orchestra Barrett and musical associate Paul Obermayer also play in the electronic duo FURT which has premiered music of Xenakis in Britain.
