Trudno wyobrazić sobie lepszy tytuł dla tej płyty. Tomasz Stańko, Jan Grabarek, muzycy Simple Acoustic Trio i w końcu sprawca całego zajścia Manu Katche, to sąsiedzi wielu znaczeniach tego słowa. Wszyscy reprezentują szkoła jazzowego grania, która wynika zarówno z faktu, że wszyscy są europejczykami, jak i z gatunku, czy też jakości, która jest im najbliższa. Być może, na co dzień nie reprezentują tego samego stylu, ale tak to właśnie jest z sąsiadami, nie zawsze są tacy sami, ale od czasu do czasu lubią zrobić coś razem. Główny bohater albumu, Manu Katche, urodził się w Paryżu i po gruntownej edukacji w klasie pianistyki klasycznej, nieoczekiwanie zaczął grać na... perkusji. Jak zdolnym okazał się muzykiem świadczy lista artystów z którymi nagrywał i koncertował, a są wśród nich Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Simple Minds, The Bee Gees, Tears For Fears, Joe Satriani i Nigel Kennedy. Imponujący dorobek, mało artystów mogłoby się takim szczycić. Album 'Neighbourhood" w pełni prezentuje umiejętności, talent i doświadczenie Manu. A zaproszeni goście tylko potwierdzają jego klasę...

Ten new songs by Manu Katché in an infectious new album. Producer Manfred Eicher assembled the band on "Neighbourhood", which brings together Jan Garbarek, with Tomasz Stanko and two of his young associates, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz. in a line-up steered by Katché's casually authoritative drums. The relaxed authority of the performance suggests a band that has a long history. Manu Katché's loping, elastic drum grooves make everyone feel comfortable. And the refreshing simplicity and directness of the tunes encourages the soloists to stretch out. Garbarek's under-exposed "jazz" chops are brought to the light in a 'straightahead' context. Listeners will be reminded of Jan's recent playing on Miroslav Vitous's best-selling "Universal Syncopations". Stanko's uniqueness is reflected in every phrase he plays. Wasilewski has some telling solos, and Kurkiewicz locks in to Manu's beats.

Artist History
Paris born (in 1958) and trained as a classical pianist, Manu Katché switched to percussion while studying at the Paris Conservatory. His distinctive drum style is derived from classical snare drum and kettledrum studies as well as from a conscious embracing of African roots. His work with Peter Gabriel on the album "So" and, subsequently on the Amnesty International World tour with Gabriel, Sting and Tracey Chapman catapulted him to world attention and he was soon recording and/or touring with Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Dire Straits, Simple Minds, The Bee Gees, Tears for Fears, Youssou N'Dour, Joan Armatrading, Joe Satriani, Nigel Kennedy and many others. However he has always maintained that jazz is his first love and he has been an ardent follower of music on ECM since he was 15. He first played with Jan Garbarek at ECM's 20th Anniversary concerts jn Paris in 1989 and has since appeared on five of his ECM albums: "I Took Up The Runes", "Ragas & Sagas", "Twelve Moons", "Visible World" and "In Praise of Dreams".
