Editor's info:
Michal Wierba Doppelganger Project is a New band formed by Michal Wierba, who is constantly following his own artistic path seeking individual sound and perfecting his musical workshop.

Michal Wierba: "It has been six years since my hard-bop odyssey started – I have released 5 albums which were highly valued by the critics, I have given lots of gigs – and then there was this moment when I said to myself – ‘That’s it! Enough. I don’t wanna do things I am used to anymore.’ I’ve gotten bored with what I had been doing until that point and so, I decided to regroup this time however involving guys from different music worlds… a sort of experiment."

After a few years of playing in Wierba&Schmidt Quintet, the pianist and composer Michal Wierba forms a new group with the piano as the leading instrument and the extended percussion section so unusual a mix on the Polish jazz music scene. While working on their first album, Patrycja Zarychta – a vocalist known for her stints with Leszek Mozdzer and Wojtek Pilichowski – joins the band. There’s also Arek Skolik – a legendary jazz drummer regarded by many as the king of swing and Lukasz Kurzydlo – one of the best drummers of the young generation, with particular interest in Latin American and Balkan music plus Kuba Dworak – a bassist bound up with both hip-hop and jazz music scene.

Michal Wierba: "Arek is a great drummer, a genuine jazz cat. The moment we first met I knew that, musically speaking, we were on the same wavelenght. We have both devoted loads of time to explore the roots of jazz to make reference to. Lukasz gives the music colour and precision, he deserves the credit for the band’s unique sound. Kuba is an incredibly mature bassist – he knows his role in the group – it’s a rare gift! Patti brings this unique lightness and fleeting beauty into it – great talent!."

Michal Wierba Doppelganger Project – Orange Sky – a debut album features eleven original compositions. Wierba makes an attempt to deconstruct jazz standards. This new approach gives us songs, fragmented interludes, quasi-romantic forms. All this falls into line with Wierba’s intention to create a truly unique and astonishing work which explores the fusion of jazz and world music.

Michal Wierba: "Orange Sky breaks with everything I’ve been doing so far. It’s an eclectic album and it might seem incoherent. I even thought… it’s like shuffle mode. I left my impress on every single piece but they all still differ. It was amazing to see how a de facto group meets in the recording studio to finish work within only one four-hour session."

Michal Wierba’s Doppelganger Project’s music can be described as a fusion between world music and jazz. One can find here fun quotes, convention, ties to tradition… but under this perfunctory layer the real beauty is hidden.
