Jakoś nie czuję się zaskoczonym najnowszym dziełem Billa Frisella. Jednak chyba nie mam ochoty, żeby akurat on jakoś specjalnie się zmieniał, albo szukał nowego brzmienia. To które usłyszycie na Valentine jest idealne. Thomas Morgan i Rudy Royston to z pewnością nie Dave Holland i Elvin Jones. To jednak inny album, niż jedno z moich ulubionych dzieł Frisella, albumu Bill Frisell With Dave Holland And Elvin Jones. Najnowszy album to Bill Frisell plus 2. Holland i Jones byli równorzędnymi partnerami gitarzysty. Najnowsza sekcja Frisella to jednak przede wszystkim tło dla lidera. To też mi nie przeszkadza, bowiem Frisell potrafi mnie zaciekawić przestrzenią pomiędzy dźwiękami gitary już od wielu lat.
Jest jednym z tych muzyków, którzy im grają mniej tym lepiej. Tak jest i tym razem. Dlatego album Valentine podoba mi się w całości, jest taką właśnie oszczędną, kameralną i zrelaksowaną produkcją. Wygląda na produkt trochę składankowy. Zaczyna się od Boubacar Traore Baba Drame, do której Frisell wraca już nie pierwszy raz. Powrót do starszych kompozycji to nie jest coś, co oznacza lenistwo. Gdyby tak było, połowę nagrań Ellingtona i Monka powinno się wyrzucić i już nigdy nie wznawiać. Frisell również rozwija melodie i przedstawia je w różny sposób.
Album, który wygląda na zbiór kompozycji premierowych, starszych melodii Frisella i przypadkowo wybranych evergreenów jest w rzeczywistości rodzajem koncertu zagranego w studiu. Trio Frisella nagrało album mając za sobą trasę koncertową niemal z marszu. Być może We Shall Overcome grywali na bis.
Po kilku wieczorach spędzonych z tym albumem mam poczucie, że ciągle jeszcze nie wiem, czy to album niezwykle spójnego i przemyślanego tria z gitarą w roli głównej, czy to tylko gitara i ważne, ale drugoplanowe tło muzyczne. Każdy kolejny wieczór z tą płytą przynosi kolejną refleksję. Próby odgadnięcia koncepcji lidera są pewnie zupełnie niepotrzebnym przyzwyczajeniem recenzenta. Niezależnie od powodu chce mi się do tej płyty wracać, a to oznacza, że muzyka brzmi interesująco i mimo prostej formy i totalnej przewidywalności nie jest ani przez chwilę nudna. Z tym albumem mogę spędzić cały wieczór nie zauważając, że słyszę te same utwory po raz kolejny.
Frisell zaskoczył swoich fanów nie raz. Ja jednak wolę jego klasyczną, zwyczajną grę na gitarze, niż wszystkie awangardowe nagrania z Johnem Zornem i Vernonem Reidem. Jak dla mnie Frisell może po swojemu grać country, amerykańskie klasyki z musicali, piosenki z list przebojów, albo co tam jeszcze ma piękne melodie. Tylko aby w małych składach i z dala od jakiejkolwiek elektroniki. Wtedy powstaną dzieła tak wyśmienite jak Valentine.
Dalej będę się upierał, że Morgan i Royston to nie Dave Holland i Elvin Jones, ani nawet nie Ron Carter i Paul Motian, ale trzeba dawać szansę młodszym muzykom rozwinąć się pod okiem starszego o pokolenie, albo dwa kolegi.
