JazzAbout.pl:
Płyta ta zawiera zapis dwóch niepublikowanych wcześniej koncertów drugiego kwintetu Milesa Davisa podczas dwóch kolejnych festiwali w Newport - w roku 1966 i 1967. Znakomity dokument i znakomita płyta jednego z najważniejszych zespołów w historii jazzu!

Editor's info:
ALL TRACKS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED
All of the surviving music from the Miles Davis Quintet's Newport sets of 1966 and 1967. Both sets were taken from the original live radio broadcasts and present exactly the same personnel. As a bonus, we have added the only two surviving tracks from the same quintet's performance in Helsinki on November 1, 1967.
Includes 16-page booklet

Created in 1954 and originally based in Newport, Rhode Island, the Newport Jazz Festival became one of the most celebrated and emblematic jazz festivals in the world. Immortalized in 1958 by Bert Stern's movie Jazz on a Summer's Day, it provided the setting for some of the most talked about events in jazz history, such as Miles Davis' 1955 performance of "'Round Midnight", which led to a resurgence in his career, or the Duke Ellington orchestra's 1956 recording of "Crescendo and Diminuendo in Blue", with never ending improvised choruses by Paul Gonsalves. Just before the aforementioned Newport '55 recordings were made, Miles had decided to kick his drug habit cold turkey. Therefore, by the time of the concert he was clean and ready to rebuild his career. This CD puts together Miles' performances from the 1966 and 1967 editions of the Newport festival. All preserved music from these events was recorded from VOA radio broadcasts, and thus we unfortunately don't have the complete shows. Miles Davis' music was (as almost always throughout his career) going through a transitional period in 1966. His quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, was on the verge of removing standards from the repertoire, to make room for Miles' compositions, and the group itself would soon change from an acoustic to an electric format. By mid-1968 he would add the electric piano as a regular feature in the band, and by 1969 the sound of Miles' music would change completely from all its previous manifestations. The Davis Quintet played several venues in Europe in late October-early November 1967 as part of the "Newport Jazz Festival in Europe" produced by George Wein. Our bonus performance belongs to that tour, and consists of two tunes from their November 1, 1967 set in Helsinki. Also taken from a radio broadcast, these are also the only tunes known to exist from that date.
