[... .] W połowie lat 70. Jarrett założył kolejny zespół, angażując tym razem muzyków europejskich: Jana Garbarka, Pallego Danielssona i Jona Christensena. W 1974 roku grupa nagrała 'Belonging', który nadal uchodzi za jeden z najlepszych zespołowych albumów w całej karierze Jarretta, oprócz lidera, bohaterem płyty jest Jan Garbarek, którego słowiańskie korzenie idealnie przystają do romantycznej natury pianisty. Kwartet dokonał wielu świetnych nagrań, wśród których wyróżniają się 'My Song' (1977), 'Nude Ants' (1979), a zwłaszcza 'Personal Mountains' (1979). Trzeba wyraźnie podkreślić, że do sukcesów Jarretta w tym czasie (i później) przyczyniła się w dużej mierze niemiecka wytwórnia ECM (artysta związał się z nią na początku lat 70.) i jej szef Manfred Eicher, który nie tylko współtworzył poetycką stylistykę muzyki Jarretta, ale dbał też o cały jego wizerunek artystyczny. This is a live set recorded by Keith Jarrett with his so-called 'European Quartet' in 1979 at New York City's Village Vanguard. Where their studio work--most notably BELONGING and MY SONG--offers shorter pieces, this finds them stretching out with just six pieces over the two-disc set.

Drummer Jon Christiansen is especially vibrant, playing with empathy and verve (he's remarkable on 'Chant of the Soil'). There are plenty of richly melodic themes for saxophonist Jan Garbarek to dance around, with the music (all written by Jarrett) mixing hymnal and folk strains together for a brightly emotive sound. Jarrett occasionally streamlines things down to solo piano interludes, as on the meditative 'Processional.' Live, this quartet stands in nice contrast to Jarrett's American ensemble (with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Dewey Redman) of the same era.
