The "Cannonball" Adderley Quintet featured on Sophisticated Swing was one of the finest bands of the altoist's career. It included Nat Adderley (Cannonball's brother) on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Despite their brilliance, the band would only record three LPs together: Sophisticated Swing (included here), Cannonball Enroute and Cannonball's Sharpshooters. Cannonball and his brother shared lifelong musical empathy, as the altoist explained during a 1972 interview: "Nat and I played together for many years, and we developed lots of things, based on other people's material, and some ideas of our own. We were basically just simple players. We had never been exposed to the blood and guts, dog-eat-dog syndrome. We were just Florida guys. So we played a lot of blues, a lot of funk, a lot of gospel-sounding stuff, and cute things based on Bird and Dizzy, Bird and Miles, based on that feeling." Around the same time that this album was recorded, Down Beat critic Don Gold stated that: "In the classification-conscious land of jazz, Julian Adderley defies categorization. His music isn't pretentiously intense. It isn't devoid of wit. Adderley, the man, isn't pompous regarding his accomplishments or aims. He doesn't confine his interests to his music, his considerations are worldly and perceptively so. He is a musician, certainly, and a composer-arranger, too. Yet he manages to conduct a radio program, write a column and make innumerable appearances as an articulate spokesman for jazz."
