W 1971 roku Duke Ellington Big Band koncertował po Europie, zawitał też wtedy po raz pierwszy i ostatni do Polski. Big band wystąpił na festiwalu Jazz Jamboree.
To nie jest tylko pozycja dla jazzowych tradycjonalistów, w końcu gdyby nie było big bandu Duke'a Ellingtona to pewnie Matthew Herbert nie powołał by do życia The Mathew Herbert Big Band.
Majestatyczna i niesłychanie intensywna muzyka Duke Ellington Big Band zachwyca zarówno walorem mistrzostwa instrumentalistów [m.in. Cootie Williams, Johnny Coles, Harold Ashby, Paul Gonsalves, Rufus Jones] jak i doborem repertuaru.
Na deser otrzymujemy również premierowo na CD koncertowy set the Duke at an Travis Air Force Base w Kaliforni w 1958 roku.

Duke Ellington to legenda. Pianista, kompozytor, twórca i lider słynnego na całym świecie big-bandu, ale przede wszystkim ikona pewnego okresu i stylu. Nic dziwnego, w końcu to on napisał ponad 2 tys. jazzowych standardów! Kto nie zna jego przebojów "It Don't Mean a Thing", "Sophisticated Lady", "In a Sentimental Mood" czy najsłynniejszego chyba "Caravan"?

Ukazujące się właśnie po raz pierwszy na CD nagranie to rejestracja koncertu orkiestry Duke'a Ellingtona w Sali Kongresowej z 30 października 1971 roku. Kiedy Ellington występował w Warszawie, nie było mnie na świecie. Trudno więc oceniać, czy nagranie oddaje atmosferę, jaka panowała wówczas w "kongresówce". Jedno jest jednak pewne. Zespół (jak i sam lider) był w kapitalnej formie. Z jednej strony otrzymujemy więc majestatyczne i klasyczne swingowe granie, z drugiej prawdziwą zabawę konwencją, pełne wirtuozerii, a zarazem swobody popisy instrumentalistów (wspaniały trębacz i wokalista Cootie Williams, saksofonista Paul Gonsalves, puzonista Malcolm Taylor, perkusista Rufus Jones).

I choć wielu z nas słucha dziś zupełnie innej muzyki, do tej płyty usiądzie zapewne z wielką przyjemnością.

For the first time on CD!!! All preserved items from Ellington's 1971 performance in Warsaw. The program was typical of Duke, including new tunes as well as all-time favourites, and ending with a marvellous duet by Duke and bassist Joe Benjamin on Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom". As a bonus, a 1958 live set by the Duke at an Air Force dance date. With the exception of "Blues in Orbit" and "Caravan", all of these tunes also appear here on CD for the first time ever.
Dating back to 1971, this concert (appearing here on CD for the first time ever) features the Duke Ellington Orchestra still in prime form. While some of the tunes from the program seem to be commercial crowd pleasers, Ellington's talent and style are clearly seen on his more serious performances here. Some examples include "La Plus Belle Africaine", the rarely heard pieces "Addi" and "Goof" and the poignant encore by Billy Strayhorn, "Lotus Blossom", played here as a duet with bassist Joe Benjamin (although the main voice heard here is Ellington's piano). As a bonus to this performance, we have added a set recorded during a long dance engagement by the Ellington band in 1958. Several hours of music were recorded during Ellington's extended dance dates of March 4 and March 5, 1958. Many of the tunes from these engagements have circulated here and there on CD editions (most of them as part of two volumes of the 10-CD edition titled Private Collection). However, with the sole exception of "Caravan" and "Blues in Orbit", none of the selections heard here have previously appeared on CD.
