Editor's info:
The complete and long unavailable broadcasts by the Coleman Hawkins quartet with Tommy Flanagan at the London House!!
Hawk and Flanagan had played and recorded together on many occasions, and these sets constitute their final collaborative recordings. As a bonus, a live version of 'Body and Soul' by Hawk, which was also recorded in a quartet format, and appears here on CD for the first time ever. Includes 16-page booklet
Coleman Hawkins remained perennially modern with an open ear for innovation. During the mid forties, he invited such musicians as Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach to join his band, and it was thanks to Hawkins that Thelonious Monk first entered a recording studio. He would even record a celebrated date with Sonny Rollins in 1963, in which the line became blurred as to who was the young and ambitious jazz upstart, and who was the swing-era veteran (Hawk would die on May 19, 1969, at the age of 64). Tommy Flanagan was one of the many modern musicians with which Hawk performed during his last years. Their collaborations began in 1958 - when both participated on the recording of the album Bean Bags by Hawk and Milt Jackson - and lasted for five years during which Flanagan made both studio albums (Coleman Hawkins All Stars, At Ease with Coleman Hawkins, Night Hawk, among many others) and plenty of live dates with Hawkins (he toured South America with him and Roy Eldridge). Sometimes they recorded in quintet or sextet formats, and other times in a quartet format, like the sets included here, which were taken from two separate radio broadcasts from the London House.
