This CD contains two complete Russell sets recorded live at Bovi's Town Tavern, in East Providence, Rhode Island, on an undetermined date in February 1964. This is the first time this music is reissued following its initial and only LP release on a long out of print set consisting of two separate albums. During that period, Russell toured with groups organized by pianist-impresario George Wein and guitarist Eddie Condon.

While the other musicians featured here are certainly not well-known names (the best known sidemen here is Porky Cohen), they lovingly and respectfully back the glorious sounds of Russell's clarinet, who shines in these rarely heard sets. Russell is showcased performing a standard traditional jazz program, but as was often the case, his solos are unique and not always related to the traditional style.

A unique and distinctive voice in jazz clarinet, Charles Ellsworth Russell (March 27, 1906-February 15, 1969) was much better known by his nickname Pee Wee. His recording career began in 1924 and continued until the year of his death. Russell's heavy alcoholism affected his health, forcing him to stop playing several times and leading to his somewhat premature death. Though often labelled a Dixieland musician by virtue of the company he kept, he tended to reject any label and in the sixties he used to include tunes by John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman in his repertoire.
