Byard Lancaster to kolejny nieodkryty dotąd diament amerykańskiej sceny New Black Music. Często goszczący w Polsce Kahil El'Zabar, David Murray czy muzycy Art Ensemble of Chicago są jej ambasadorami. Jednak krąg muzyków tej sceny jest oczywiście dużo szerszy.
Ten blisko 70 letni multi-instrumentalista nagrywał/koncertował z wieloma amerykańskimi muzykami, wymieńmy ważniejszych: Archie Shepp, Elvin Jones, Sunny Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sun Ra, Memphis Slim, Johnny Copeland, Sonny Sharrock, Bill Dixon, Burton Greene.
Płyta nagrana w kwartecie "a' Heavenly Sweetness" wyrasta z gruntu afro-amerykańskiej kultury, urzekającej prostotą bluesowych fraz, radością wspólnego muzykowania, unikalną wyobraźnią i oparciu w tradycji. Wydawca klasyfikuje ją jako Soul Jazz/Cosmo-Blues i to chyba udanie opisuje charakter muzyki zawartej na płycie. Musician and activist Byard Lancaster just passed away of pancreatic cancer.

A spiritual child of John Coltrane whom he frequented and played with a few times, he played sax, flute, piano and sang with an intense spiritual connection. He has released more than 20 albums under his name and played or recorded with Mc Coy Tyner, Sun Ra, Sunny Murray, Bill Dixon, Bill Laswell, Jef Gilson among so many others.
He was my mentor for a few years, welcomed me in his home in Philly and introduced me to the Philly Jazz scene. I had the chance and pleasure to produce a few albums from him and his friends and had some of my most magical recording studio experiences with him.

His motto was ‘From Sex Machine to a Love Supreme’ and I’m sure he is now resting in the Spirit’s Light …
Our label name ‘Heavenly Sweetness’ was taken from one of his composition’s title and we had the pleasure to produce his album ‘Thunderbid Service’ (release through Discograph) and his version of Blue Train on 7”.
