Calvin Weston (ur. 1959 r.) jako siedemnastolatek zaczął grać z Ornette'em Colemanem w legendarnej grupie Prime Time. Zakładał z Johnem Lurie - The Lounge Lizards, przez lata grał u boku Jamesa Blooda Ulmera i Marka Ribota, ale też Johna Zorna, Tricky'ego, Eyvinda Kanga i Jamesa Cartera. Wydana w Tzadik Records płyta "Mirakle" tria Bailey / Tacuma / Weston, zaliczana jest do grupy najważniejszych płyt jazzu tego okresu. W jego dotychczasowym dorobku można znaleźć swobodną improwizacją, muzykę etniczną oraz formy otwarte. Skomplikowane rytmy i zaskakujące harmonie, jakimi często się posługuje, przemawiają szczególnie do wielbicieli nowoczesnego jazz-rocka, z dużym zakresem wolności i bogatego w improwizacje.

Trzecia płyta Westona dla nowojorskiej oficyny 577 Records zadowoli fanów pierwszego składu Mahavishnu Orchestra, z Jerry'm Goodmanem w składzie, ale także nieodżałowanego The Lounge Lizards i zespołów Marka Ribota. Wprowadzenie do obsady klasycznego smyczkowego kwartetu (dwoje skrzypiec, altówka i wiolonczela) wyprowadza jazz-rockową formułę grania w nowe rejony. A trzeba tu dodać, że ów string quartet nie jest tylko kwiatkiem do kożucha, jest pełnoprawnym uczestnikiem w zbiorowej improwizacji.

G. Calvin Weston z Elliotem Garlandem tworzą świetną funkową sekcję, a Tom Spiker na elektrycznym wiośle, niczym Ribot ubarwia całość surfującymi riffami. Lider z porywającą swobodą żegluje zarówno zgodnie z rytmem, jak i poza nim, albo lepiej obok niego. Jego perkusja jest jak gniew grzmotu, umiejętność wyprowadzania tylko celnych ciosów to rzadkość, Weston posiadł ją w stopniu mistrzowskim.

Program płyty dzielą między siebie lider i klawiszowiec o swojsko brzmiącym nazwisku - David Dzubinski. Materiał został nagrany w maju 2019 roku w Filadelfii i wydany teraz wyłącznie na winylu, wyposażonym dodatkowo w download code. Tak więc nawet dla niewinylowców jest on dostępny.

On his third album for 577 Records, drummer G. Calvin Weston, known for his work with Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, The Lounge Lizards, James Blood Ulmer and Marc Ribot, hits notes both on and off the beat, that mark the time and space of sound, with edgy and sharp melodies. If you listen carefully, you’ll hear an obsessive bass-line that incites the explosion of rhythm. Dust and Ash is like a sand storm that changes direction with the wind and tries to imprison the traveler. If you hear it without anchors or safety nets, it is like an abstraction that draws a perfect shape. It is like a voyage without departure or arrival points, in which a woman’s voice allows itself to be cuddled by the shadows of a piano and dances with them to become a waterfall of notes before taking off.

More than ever, G. Calvin Weston’s playing is the rage of thunder, the melting of sound in a carpet of drums. The sound of the vital resistance of a native Philadelphian, the rage of blood that follows the edgy melodies of The Phoenix Orchestra, a boutique of sounds to be found, discovered, caressed, without questions that would compromise its flying.

This is a tight and ferocious work marrying advanced string section composition and a smoking, groove-heavy rock-jazz fusion unit. Pianist David Dzubinski and Grant Calvin Weston (drums, pocket trumpet) share the bulk of the composition credits, while solos are shared by the ensemble players, featuring Carlos Santiago and Benjamin Sutin (violins), Ajibola Rivers (cello), Elliot Garland (bass), Tom Spiker (guitar) and vocalist Kayle Brecher.

While the debt to the Mahavishnu Orchestra is evident, the intros and segue sections reflect a 20th century classical feel, creating a thoughtful but no less acute space for the groove tracks that follow.

When that happens, it's a wild ride, propelled by Weston's precise and no-holds-barred drum kit that drives the whole ensemble into a precise frenzy. Weston has a track to himself, called "Thunder," that displays a virtuosity in both technique and compositional feel.

While this music can definitely be filed under "fusion," the imaginative and sensitive use of strings and vocal to provide a sympathetic contrast to the rock make it special.
