Czy wyobrażacie sobie fuzję laswellowskiego Praxis i Lounge Lizards Johna Lurie?
Ja do lektury płyty "Flying Kites" duetu Grant Calvin Weston & Lucas Brode sobie nie wyobrażałem.

Doświadczanie muzyki, będącej efektem głębokiego dialogu muzyków mądrych swoim doświadczeniem i płodnych swoim potencjałem kreatywności zawsze jest cenne. Jednak czasami nawet wielcy mędrcy wpadają w pustosłowie. W końcu nie zawsze jesteśmy na fali, nie zawsze jesteśmy w pełni dysponowani. A tylko wtedy udaje nam się ten śmiały cel, jakim jest przekazywanie w muzyce, literaturze, filmie ... fotografii, rzeczy najistotniejszych. Po wysłuchaniu "Flying Kites" wszystkie moje obawy okazały się płonne. Muzycy stworzyli polistylistyczne misterium, gatunkowy amalgamat, który trudno co prawda rozebrać na czynniki pierwsze, ale efekt finalny jest doskonały.

Grant Calvin Weston, członek Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Band, zespołów Jamesa Blooda Ulmera, Tricky'ego, John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards, Jamesa Cartera, Marka Ribota to po prostu światowa znakomitość. Nowojorski gitarzysta i kompozytor Lucas Brode swobodnie porusza się pomiędzy jazzem, eksperymentalnym rockiem, po muzykę afrykańską (kilka lat pobierał lekcje u legendarnego muzyka z Ghany - Yacuba Addy'ego. Był członkiem post-rockowego zespołu Hannibal Montana i psychodelicznego Perhaps (z członkami Acid Mothers Temple).

Ta konfiguracja daje piorunujące wrażenie, muzycy dają upust swojej pokręconej wyobraźni i czarnemu humorowi, a w warstwie muzycznej niebywale połamanym rytmom. Muzycy perfekcyjnie łączą ciężki funk z szalonym jazzem, psychodelią i kilkoma innymi stylami. "Flying Kites" to znakomita płyta!

In the months leading up to this project, common colleagues and friends of G. Calvin Weston and Lucas Brode suggested that the two musicians should meet and collaborate, considering that Lucas is a major fan of Lounge Lizards, the renowned band that Calvin joined in 1990. Once Calvin, known for his work with Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, heard some of Lucas's guitar playing, he suggested that they make a recording together. Lucas immediately agreed to the idea. Some time later, Lucas received a massive folder of Calvin's drumming, along with a few whacky synth noises. Lucas organized sound collages, then made guitar loops and recorded solos and other sounds that he felt would complement the energy of the project.

The final result is a powerful recording that features heavy, intricate and deep grooves, at times reminiscent of Marc Ribot on John Zorn's Asmodeus: Book of Angels Volume 7 (another group that features G. Calvin Weston) or punk-influenced music, one of Lucas's early inspirations, along with more introspective moments similar to Lounge Lizards.
