Po sukcesie albumu "Alma" - pierwszej kooperacji włoskiego trębacza Paolo Fresu i kubańskiego pianisty Omara Sosy - w czerwcu 2015 r. muzycy weszli do ArteSuono Studio, by nagrać tuzin nowych lub zapożyczonych kompozycji.

Album "Eros" otwiera oryginalna aranżacja hitu brytyjskiej formacji Massive Attack "Teardrop". Delikatne akordy fortepianu powtarzane w minimalistycznym stylu mieszają się z elektronicznymi dźwiękami płynącymi z klawiatur.

Nastrojowa wokaliza Natachy Atlas napotyka dwie trąbki Paolo Fresu - tę łagodną i tę ostrą, choć stłumioną. Oniryczna melodia zawładnie każdym, kto ma romantyczną duszę, wszak tytuł albumu zobowiązuje do miłosnych uniesień. Temat Massive Attack przechodzi niepostrzeżenie w kompozycję "Ya Habibi", napisaną wspólnie przez Omara Sosę, Fresu, Atlas i Samyego Bishaia. Arabskie zawodzenie Natachy dodaje egzotyki i przenosi nas do krainy "Baśni z 1001 nocy".

Jest jeszcze jeden przebój na tej płycie - "What Lies Ahead" Petera Gabriela, ujmująca tkliwością ballada zagrana przez Sosę na preparowanym fortepianie i Fresu na trąbce z tłumikiem. Wtóruje im wiolonczela Brazylijczyka Jaquesa Morelenbauma. W kilku tematach usłyszymy smyczkowy Quarteto Alborada. Urokliwy album, doskonały na jesienne i zimowe wieczory we dwoje.

Po prawie czterech latach od ukazania się „ Alma”, pierwszej płyty Paolo Fresu / Omar Sosa i po licznych trasach koncertowych artyści rozbudowują projekt duetu i proponują rozbudowany brzmieniowo album „Eros”. Sardyńczyk Paolo Fresu ( którego nazywa się często najprzystojniejszym trębaczem świata, a krytycy porównują jego grę do jazzu Cheta Bakera) i Kubańczyk Omar Sosa doskonale się rozumieją. Afrykańskie brzmienia i latynoskie rytmy znakomicie więc stapiają się z delikatnym dźwiękiem. Tym razem w nagraniu płyty uczestniczyli także egipska wokalistka Natacha Atlas, brazylijski wiolonczelista Jaques Morelenbaum i kwartet smyczkowy Quarteto Alborada. W muzyce artystów zbiły się zatem elementy afro-kubańskie i śródziemnomorski folklor a nad wszytskim szczęśliwie panuje jazzowa struktura.

Program albumu wypełniają własne i premierowe kompozycje duetu oraz ciekawe interpretacje utworów Petera Gabriela ( “What Lies Ahead“) i… Massive Attack (“Teardrop“). Kunsztownie opracowana aranżacja “Teardrop” obrana jest w subtelne, minimalistyczne akordy fortepianu stapiające się z elektroniką, partiami trąbki i zmysłowymi, arabskimi wokalizami Natachy Atlas. Sam temat Massive Attack przechodzi niepostrzeżenie w kompozycję “Ya Habibi”, napisaną wspólnie przez Sosę, Fresu, Atlas i Samyego Bishaia. Także urokliwy przebój Petera Gabriela “What Lies Ahead” staje się subtelną balladą zaproponowana przez Omara Sosę na preparowanym fortepianie i atakowaną przez Paolo Fresu trąbką z tłumikiem. Wtóruje im, goniąc jakby własne skojarzenia, wiolonczela Brazylijczyka Jaquesa Morelenbauma. Udział w nagraniach kwartetu smyczkowego Quarteto Alborada dodaje całemu projektow posmaku „poważnej” klasyki i muzycznego dostojeństwa

Starting from the two musicians’ instruments, bits, samples, vocals, noises and percussions have been added to create a true polyphonic experience.

While the connection between Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu was established back in 2006, their partnership truly blossomed with Alma (Ota Music, 2012), a beauty of an album with a soft sell approach. That record—quite possibly the most moving item in either man's discography—prioritized heart over all else, and this follow-up date follows suit.

Eros—the god of love—serves as muse and sculptor on this easygoing outing. Sosa and Fresu are both in fine form, lulling the listener into a space where the many different faces of love serve as guides, and they bring a smart mixture of passion and prudence to bear in the music. That's evident from the start, as "Teardrop-Ya Habibi"—a clever take on a Massive Attack song, featuring vocalist Natacha Atlas—takes flight. Arabian sounds, hints of neo-soul, and moody notions are all blended and molded into a shapely design that's simply mesmerizing.

Elsewhere these two move in different stylistic directions while maintaining that same balance, addressing the need for emotional release and restraint. "Sensuousness" and "What Lies Ahead"—pieces which utilize the rich cello work of Jaques Morelenbaum—capitalize on candidness. Lyricism and wistfulness take hold and never let go. Then there's "Zeus' Desire," a number that blends new age sentiments with quaint thoughts and positive spirits; "My Soul, My Spirit," a work that features Atlas and operates in a cinematic realm not too far removed from the work of Lisa Gerrard with Hans Zimmer; and "Eros Mediterraneo," which opens on Fresu in a pensive state before shifting to sunnier environs. All of it is of a piece, yet each track has its own identifying markers and personality traits.

Both Sosa and Fresu are masters of putting across moving thoughts. They say more with less, artfully color their true voices with electronic effects, and place equal value on atmosphere and substantial thought throughout these understated tales of love.
