W tym okresie Charles rozpoczął współpracę z grupą młodych dziewczyn z Filadelfii, tworzących zespół The Cookies. Przed odejściem Charlesa z wytwórni Atlantic do wytwórni ABC Paramount Records w 1959 roku, z którą podpisał bardziej lukratywny kontrakt, muzyk zdążył jeszcze nagrać album The Genius of Ray Charles. Jedne z najpopularniejszych piosenek Raya: „Georgia on My Mind”, „Hit the Road Jack” i „Unchain My Heart” pomogły mu odnieść sukces w muzyce popularnej, a album "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" oraz jego sequel "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Vol. 2" wprowadziły country do gatunków muzyki mainstreamowej.

"Hit The Road Jack", i prezentuje muzykę Raya Charlesa w absolutnie szczytowej formie.

Editor's info:
Ray Charles (1930 – 2004), 'The Genius' best known for his hits like Hit The Road Jack, I Got a Woman and Georgia On My Mind, was a rising star when performing in Zurich with his big band in 1961. The big band on this album, appeared to be an ideal platform for what he had in mind to create jazzy music that he would mark with his own stamp by adding vast touches of soul and rhythm'n blues. With a remarkably balanced repertoire and brilliantly devised full orchestral tuttis, at the time of this tour Ray Charles' Big Band was at its peak to deliver the singer's deliberately flashy musical credo: "Genius Soul = Jazz"!

End-to-end, the rhythm section is impeccable, even during the most demanding arrangements by Quincy Jones or Ernie Wilkins, with particular mention going to drummer Bruno Carr. As for the instrumentation per se, "Brother Ray" knew perfectly well that for the orchestral glue to come together it was a question of finding the right balance between the tuttis that ideally highlighted the vocal parts, with the sensual backing by the Raelettes choir, and a place consequently left to the great soloists featured in his orchestra.

As far as Mr. Ray… he was true to form. Whispering or churchy, tender or punchy, his joy in this first ever concert of a tour that would be crucial for him and his career is audible and demonstrative. One should not fail to mention that the sound recording cannot do full justice to his piano playing, at times strangely behind in the mix of the time… That said, this absolutely untouched recording overall has a communicative sharpness and energy and will also fill a "void" in the phonographic record of the European tour of "Brother Ray" in the autumn of 1961. He who embarked the very next day for France to deliver this message of brotherhood that would be so in contrast with the events of the Algerian War and the terrible night of 17-18 October in Paris. One would not go so far as to say that the "The Genius" was awaited like a Messiah. Although…
