Super trio prowadzone przez włoskiego pianistę Stefano Bollaniego, który od 2007 roku, kiedy to zdobył Hans Koller European Jazz Prize, dla najlepszego muzyka jazzowego roku, powszechnie uznawany jest za jednego z najwybitniejszych jazzmenów.

Bollani rozpoczął karierę profesjonalną blisko 20 lat temu grając przede wszystkim muzykę pop. Po otrzymaniu Dyplomu konserwatorium we Florencji w 1993 r. zanurzył się w muzyce jazzowej i rozpoczął częstą współpracę z innymi muzykami, poczynając od Enrico Ravy, jak również z Richardem Galliano, Patem Metheny, Michelem Portal, Lee Konitz, Paolo Fresu i wieloma innymi.
W swojej karierze występował na najważniejszych scenach świata i otrzymał ważne nagrody w kraju i za granicą. Prestiżowe czasopismo Musica Jazz ogłosiło go najlepszym talentem roku 1998, a japońskie czasopismo Swing Journal, najważniejszy periodyk jazzowy w Japonii, przyznało mu w roku 2003 New Star Award, po raz pierwszy przyznany muzykowi europejskiemu.

'...Trio jazzowe to bodaj najbardziej eksploatowany skład jazzowy, jednak nie znaczy to, że wyeksploatowany. Płyta 'Mi Ritorni...' jest tego kolejnym dowodem. Wypełniają ją kompozycje mniej lub zupełnie nie znane, podane w ten sposób, że stale czuje się tu, niejako wewnątrz muzyki, wybitną osobowość wykonawców. Bollani nie boi się zaglądać pod klapę fortepianu, prezentuje ową klasyczną doskonałość wykonania, która znaczy tutaj przejrzystość faktury, melodyczność gry i wyrazistość ornamentyki...'

Bass player Jesper Bodilsen has long since made a name for himself as one of the most sought-after Danish bassists. But being a young jazz bassist in the country that has bred virtuosos like Niels-Henning Řrsted Pedersen, Mads Vinding and Jesper Lundgaard is no easy thing. And it doesn't make it any easier for the 'young one' that he expresses himself differently than these virtuosos in that he doesn't always play as many notes in his solos or dominates the sound to the same extent when accompanying.
33-year-old Jesper Bodilsen is, actually, a student of both NHŘP and Jesper Lundgaard, but at an early point in his career he challenged the 'established' Danish bass school. Bodilsen is no lesser an instrumentalist, but his personality and instrumental technique is more reminiscent of the American bassists whose greatest quality is an ability to create a dark and solid groove behind the soloists, and whose playing is characterized by pensiveness rather than cascades of notes. Thus Bodilsen hasn't sought shelter in the European school which can be said to have evolved around these Danish bassists, but he has done a lot for European self-esteem by choosing a European guest for his debut cd under his own name. Where nine out of ten musicians would have looked for an American pianist to lend a certain sparkle to their debut, Bodilsen has chosen a young Italian musician - Stefano Bollani - who can play rings around most of the musicians others might have chosen. Bodilsen first met Bollani when the two of them, as well as this trio's drummer, Morten Lund, were part of the band accompanying trumpeter Enrico Rava when he was awarded the Danish Jazzpar Prize. So in this way Bodilsen helps challenge the conservatism and habitual thinking in European Jazz which has created a closer jazz alliance across the Atlantic Ocean than among the European countries. This is the first of his achievements on this debut CD. The others will be apparent when you listen to the music.
Bodilsen doesn't concern himself with composer ambitions on his debut. He chooses his standards with care, and he lets Bollani introduce several Italian folk themes - and a Swedish one. There is no need to polish a composer's halo as well. This is one more situation where this cd debut goes against the trend of the times.
The carefully picked material enables the music to flow from this trio in a steady current of intelligence, imagination and delight in playing. Bollani finds his phrases in a deep understanding of the harmonic structures, allowing him to display extreme boldness without ever betraying the melody. Bodilsen is a granite foundation, demonstrating a large and flexible tone and an undisputed authority as the leader of the trio, while Lund spurs them on, constantly varying his sound.
International jazz audiences will find that in Bodilsen & Lund, Denmark offers an alternative to the legendary tandem NHŘP & Alex Riel, and Scandinavian audiences will find that a young Italian pianist is ready to accept the baton from the other European greats. In other art.... Forms it takes massive funding from the EU to get Italian and Danish artists on this level together. In jazz, all it takes is the memory of a chance meeting and a phone call - resulting in world-class art.....
