Editor's info:
Five Steps 2 Seven is Mikkel Nordso's gift to music lovers on his 40th anniversary as a professional musician. The 55 year-old Danish guitar king could have celebrated the event with a huge party, but instead he recorded this album with the music that he loves the most.
Jazz-rock is the word most commonly used to describe the sometimes heavy-handed fusion of jazz, rock and blues, which finds various expressions in artists such as Groover Washington, Chick Corea, Weather Report, Lee Ritenour and Carlos Santana. There is no doubt that Nordso has the closest kinship with Santana. Mikkel is more or less self-taught, although at the age of 11 he did take flamenco lessons for a short spell with guitarist Christian Sievert. He soon fell in love with the music of South America, and the inspiration from this music has followed him throughout his career and especially in "Acoustic Guitars" and "Mikkel Nordso Band".
The Danish guitar king travels frequently, but on Five Steps 2 Seven - an on and off project - he feels at home. He has chosen the musicians with care and waited patiently, until they had the time to participate together or on their own. As his own producer, Mikkel Nordso wasn't satisfied until even the smallest detail sounded great. With international jazzrock icons drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, saxophonist Bob Malach, bassist Etienne Embappé, and several of his life-long musical confidantes, pianist Ben Besiakov, Christian Douglas and others, Mikkel creates the smoothest, coolest, grooviest update of 80's-style jazz-rock. Back in the days when it was no big deal to spend months in expensive studios - recording instrumental music! This 2010 edition sparkles like the polished crown on the king's head! Mikkel's first paid music job was in 1970, when Palle Mikkelborg invited the 15 year-old guitarist to join his V-8 band. In 1973 Mikkel Nordso co-founded Buki-Yamaz, and 1980-85 he played guitar in the popular rock group Sneakers while working with Kenneth Knudsen's jazz group Anima on the side. He started Mikkel Nordso Band in 1985, and since then the group has released 7 albums. Since the late 1980's he has recorded four albums and performed regularly on acoustic with Acoustic Guitars.
Bombay Hotel with Kenneth Knudsen on keyboards, Ole Theill on ntablas and Mikkel on guitars has recorded 2 albums with a distinct Indian flavor. Time Wave started as a family project featuring Mikkel, his brother Klavs on percussion, his cousin Tine Rehling on harp and his uncle Jesper B. Christensen on cembalo, but today the musical expressions of these two groups are mainly lived out with Tine Rehling and Ole Theill in Blue Lotus, which released its debut earlier this year.
Mikkel Nordso has performed and recorded with a seemingly endless list of well-known international and local artists and toured most of the world. In recent years his credits include Marilyn Mazur, L. Subramaniam, Kavita Krishnamurthi, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Thomas Clausen, Gary Burton, and Lan Doky's project with David Sanborn, Randy Brecker, Terri Lyne Carrington, Gino Vanelli and Lisa Nilsson. Mikkel Nordso appears on more than 200 albums, on movie soundtracks, and has composed for television and theater.
