Editor's info:
Ed Thigpen prefers not to be called a living legend. Living indeed - but legend, no, this would imply a person whose life's work is over, someone living on his reputation. This is not the case with the 73-year old Danish resident who started his professional drumming career in the late 1940s. Ed Thigpen is as active as ever, and always ready to take new directions and seek new challenges. And that is what his fourth STUNT release, ED THIGPEN SCANTET #1, is about.
Up through the 1950s, Ed Thigpen performed with major names like Dinah Washington, Cootie Williams and Johnny Hodges before joining Oscar Peterson's famous trio in 1959. Later, years were spent with Ella Fitzgerald, before he found himself in Denmark in the early '70s. Copenhagen is still the base from which he tours most of the world, alone or with his groups. Scantet demonstrates that he remains the interested and attentive inspirator for several generations.
Thigpen formed the band in order to show the rest of the world what fantastic musicians live up here in the North. Take his choice of horns: Trumpeter Jens Winther and tenor saxophonist Tomas Franck. You won't find better anywhere. Two mature and original musicians of international quality, and outstanding bandleaders in the own right. Pianist Kasper Villaume and bassist Jesper Bodilsen are both exceptional examples of the high level of musicianship among the young generation of Danish jazz musicians. Kasper Villaume is the young lion of Danish pianists, with an incredible technique and a wonderful sense of swing. Jesper Bodilsen, the perfect and calm bassist, helps to keep things together with his underlying groove and full, deep sound.
And of course there is Ed Thigpen himself - his drumming has rarely been heard in such an impressive and well-balanced recording. Sun Studio's Bjarne Hansen has polished every detail, and Thigpen's varied and intense drumming is conveyed in the best possible manner - with sticks or his famous brush work - nothing is lost.
Most of the tunes are Ed Thigpen's own, catchy compositions, but there are a couple of standards as well, and one by Tomas Franck. Thigpen's transformation into composer - or songwriter, as he says himself - stems from his affection for the bebop, blues-based, and very rhythmical 'songs' he grew up with. He has performed these 'songs' with the impressive list of soloists with whom he has shared the spotlight for half a century. One more sign that Thigpen is still developing and searching....and incidentally, he thinks Scantet performs his tunes so very well.
Ed Thigpen calls Scantet "My concert dance band", because the music is equally suitable for dancing and intense listening. According to Thigpen, jazz isn't a one-dimensional art-form, it utilizes all musical disciplines.
"This wonderful project is very special to me, because all the music and the musicians are of my own personal choice. Scantet was formed as an international showcase for the exceptional Scandinavian talent. I'm grateful, and proud to say that Jens, Tomas, Kasper, Jesper and I speak in our own individual, as well as common 'voices' in Scantet. Listen for yourself! Let the music speak - Join us and enjoy
