The vibraphonist Wolfgang Schlüter was a legend of the first post-war generation of German jazz artists and a superb soloist of international stature. With his last album FOR YOU,the ECHO Jazz and Hamburger Jazz Award winner fulfilled a long-held dream at the age of 85. It was recorded with his quartet, whose line-up had remained the same for more than a decade, and conductor and arranger Wolf Kerschek prepared string versions of his favourite compositions for this collection. The planned world premiere of this project in the Elbphilharmonie as part of the ELBJAZZ would without doubt have been a very special highlight in his musical career and in the line up of the festival. Sadly, however, Schlüter died suddenly of a stroke on 12 November 2018.

In honour of Wolfgang Schlüter, this concert will now take place without him, but in his spirit. Schlüter was a passionate jazz musician: “Jazz must be impulsive and intuitive,” he said once. “You can’t work out what you want to play beforehand. That would be like serving up lukewarm coffee. When you do that, jazz becomes cold and inaccessible.”
