Postmodernizm pełną gębą! Ale etykiety gatunkowe są tutaj nie na miejscu, swoboda, z jaką muzycy żeglują w poprzek podziałów muzycznych imponuje, co ważne, w żadnym momencie nie tracą kontroli nad komunikatywną strukturą całości. Wielka w tym zasługa doskonałego gitarzysty Franka Möbusa. Jazzowej publiczności znany jest głównie za sprawą formacji Der Rote Bereich, której jest liderem i z którą nagrał sześć płyt. Znany z niekonwencjonalnych rozwiązań muzycznych, anarchistycznego humoru, inteligentnych aranżacji i oryginalnego brzmienia pozostaje jednym z najbardziej kreatywnych europejskich gitarzystów.

Założyciel zespołu, Oli Steidle współpracował z Tomaszem Stańko, Louisem Sclavisem, Seanem Berginem, Vincentem Courtouis, Ernstem Reijsegerem, Joshem Rosemanem, Simonem Nabatovem, Nilsem Wogramem, i Walterem Wierbosem. Jednak jego zainteresowania wybiegają daleko poza jazzową estetykę. Założony w 2013 roku zespół The Killing Popes jest emanacją tych zainteresowań. Dwóch klawiszowców w składzie, Dan Nicholls i Kit Downes umiejętnie zagęszczają dźwiękową fakturę, kreując halucynogenną aurę. Podstawowy skład uzupełnia basista Phil Donkin.

Dawno już nie słyszałem tak twórczego odwołania do ducha m-base, stylowe i także zaskakujące wokalne "diaboliki" tylko podnoszą i tak już wysoką temperaturę całości. Muzyka Oli Steidle & The Killing Popes zdecydowanie wybiega w przyszłość - zadziwiają wątki, których kontynuacja zapewne jeszcze przed nami, szczypta psychodelii, rockowego transu i improwizacyjnej furii kieruje język jazzu na nowe terytoria.

The fact that Frank Mobus (leader of the band Roter Bereich and part of Carlos Bicaís Azul) is a member of The Killing Popes, and that this group founded by drummer Oli Steidle has Kalle Kalima, Petter Eldh and Andreas Schaerer, among others, as guests on ìEgo Pillsî is very enlightening about some of the musical choices theyíre doing in other projects. Why? Well, because they seem to take inspiration from the wild mix of electro-jazz, art rock, hardcore and club music youíll find in these compositions. If you already suspected that they have a punk side (and a rave one, by the way), here is the definitive confirmation. The punk and party factors here are electronic, with two keyboardists two, Dan Nicholls and Kit Downes, and the resulting music is so intelligently funny, bright and light that they put pop acts like Daft Punk to shame, going from beautiful moments to chaos and back. If you had any doubts about the capacity of the present-day jazz musicians to renew their imaginations and creativity, this record will change your mind. Oli Steidle, a box of surprises.
