Monica Zetterlund was a Swedish actress who loved jazz and could sing quite well in a pure and quietly expressive voice. Born in 1937, she started out as a jazz singer before she started an acting career that made her a household name in Sweden, appearing in films and on television. Zetterlund never gave up singing jazz and in 1964 she recorded with the Bill Evans Trio. Another highpoint of her jazz career was recording It Only Happens Every Time with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1977.

A jazz institution for over a decade at that time, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra is in fine form on this set, with the key solos being by cornetist Jones and baritonist Pepper Adams (who plays on two Lars Gullin songs). But otherwise, Monica Zetterlund is the main star, sounding at her best on Blossom Dearie’s “Long Daddy Green,” an emotional “He Was Too Good To Me” and Jerome Richardson's swinging “The Groove Merchant.” It Only Happens Every Time is one of her finest hours.
