Dwie wyjątkowe ikony jazzu: John Stowell i Dave Liebman proponują na swej najnowszej płycie zestaw ponadczasowych standardów w kameralnych wersjach zaaranżowanych w większości na saksofon i gitarę. Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Bill Evans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Kenny Wheeler, Wayne Shorter – wielkie nazwiska kompozytorów,

ale i wielcy interpretatorzy, którzy powrócili do współpracy po ponad 10 latach od czasu wydania albumu The Banff Sessions.

Konwencja duetu okazała się dobra dla obu instrumentalistów – daje większą przestrzeń do improwizacji niż w większej grupie i unika tym samym przytłaczającego wpływu sekcji rytmicznej.

Tytuł płyty: Blue Rose znamy już w muzyce jazzowej z historycznego albumu z roku 1956, wówczas utwór Ellingtona posłużył za tytuł albumu Rosemary Clooney. Od roku 2013 tytuł Blue Rose kojarzyć się będzie również z wspaniałym albumem nagranym przez jednego z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych współczesnych saksofonistów, jakim jest Liebman, i wyjątkowego gitarzystę Johna Stowella.

Podczas „Time Remembered” Billa Evansa, Dave Liebman z powodzeniem siada przy fortepianie, przypominając tym samym, że jest także doprawdy wyjątkowym pianistą. Przejmująco i z wielkim uczuciem interpretuje piękny temat Evansa, czyniąc tym samym z „Time Remembered” wyjątkową perełkę na całej płycie, będącą duetem gitarowo-fortepianowym.

Brazylijski klimat bossa novy „Until Paisagem” Antonio Carlosa Jobima ujmuje w interpretacji duetu wyjątkowym pięknem, delikatnością i swego rodzaju bogactwem dźwiękowym.

Ogniste partie gitary Stowella zachwycają czystością i przenikliwością, a Liebman obnaża na Blue Rose swe oblicze multiinstrumentalisty, mistrzowsko kreując zarówno partie sopranowe i tenorowe, jak i te wykonywane na drewnianym flecie („Black Eyes”) czy fortepianie („Time Remembered”).

Płyta zachwyca zarówno kontemplacyjnymi, melancholijnymi klimatami, jak i rytmiczną pulsacją i melodyjnością znanych standardów. Tym, czego trudno nie dostrzec podczas słuchania albumu, jest fakt, iż obaj giganci jazzu robią wrażenie grających naprawdę wspólnie. Nie znajdziemy tu jakichś samotnych solowych, wirtuozerskich wycieczek – jest za to coś w rodzaju wzajemnego szacunku i wyjątkowego porozumienia, jakie doprawdy bardzo rzadko zdarza się młodszym muzykom. Jeśli Liebman czy Stowell improwizują – robią to w wyjątkowy sposób jednocześnie. Tak grają jedynie Najwięksi.

Piękna, klimatyczna, kameralna płyta. Mistrzowie!

The singular guitarist John Stowell and saxophone legend Dave Liebman have been friends and colleagues for decades and occasionally find time to perform or record together, such as on Stowell's 2002 release, "The Banff Sessions" (Origin). For "Blue Rose," Stowell and Liebman gathered at a studio in the heart of the Pocono Mountains for an intimate set of duets, performing standards such as Cole Porter's "Everything I Love," along with compositions from modern jazz composers, including Wayne Shorter's "Black Eyes" and Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song But My Own."
