John Shifflett (1953 - 2017) was a beloved bassist, and well-known as THE sideman for many of the San Francisco Bay Area’s foremost ensembles. What is not as well-known is his talent as a composer of many compelling pieces of music.
Saxophonist Kristen Strom, guitarist Scott Sorkin and drummer Jason Lewis played with John in their quartet and countless other projects for more than 25 years. For this tribute to John, Kristen, Scott and Jason have arranged a collection of his compositions and brought together some of the Bay Area’s best musicians to record and perform his music. These musicians are also some of John’s dearest friends.

This project was a labor of love for all involved. John was beloved for his musicianship, his musical generosity and his humor.
I often quote John to my students when talking about the roles of musicians in a group. When asked what his job was, John replied, “My job is to help.” He believed his job was to further the music in any way he could and make it easier for others to do so. May that belief live on!
