"Płyta „Feelings”, sygnowana przez kompozytora i leadera Marka Jakubowicza, jest zbiorem dźwięków raczej odnalezionych niż poszukiwanych.

I tak, rozpoczynające „Travel Memories”, opatrzone świetną frazą-tematem nieaksamitnego kontrabasu, rozpuszcza się niejako w emocjach kolejnych kilku utworów, i to chyba z autorską premedytacją, by powrócić z podobną emfazą w „Blue Rose” i w tytułowym „Feelings”, cudownie opatrzonym wzruszającą partią wokalną. To moment kulminacyjny całej płyty. Partie gitarowe są niepospieszne, trzymające na dystans pokusę wirtuozerii, w swej jednostajności niepokojące i upajające.

Na poły sentymentalne, na poły nostalgiczne obrazy przenoszą słuchacza gdzieś na południe, na nieskonkretyzowany wyraźnymi odniesieniami muzycznymi – zachodnio-południowy kraniec Europy. Tam też zmienia się na chwilę nastrój podmiotu-wędrowca: wyczuwa się pewność w pokonywaniu nieznanych terenów, swoistego rodzaju spryt obserwatora, który uświadomił sobie, jak nazywać odczucia powtarzalności widoków („Behind the Scene”).

Osiągniecie celu podróży nie jest przyozdobione szczęściem odnalezionego, co dobitnie można wyczuć w „Si Ceng Xiang Shi” (déja vu) – niewątpliwie wokalnej perełce zostawionej na przedostatni akord płyty. „Before You Were Born”, zostawione na sam koniec, jest trochę inne, smutne i proste, lecz poprowadzone z wyczuciem partie harfy z przeplotami gitary nie pozwalają zapomnieć dźwięków od razu, cisza nie jest głucha, bo wypełniają ją muśnięcia emocji, uzależnionych od wrażliwości każdego słuchacza z osobna. Global jazz taken to the most organic level possible in a truly stunning display of beauty embraced with simplicity and complexity all most simultaneously. Marek Jakubowicz fronts an amazing collective with perhaps the finest musicians from Poland along with the soft yet lyrically focused vocals of one Anna Axmo from Malaysia. As often said, artistic comparisons are inherently unfair as Jakubowicz carries a most unique voice for modern jazz guitar but comparisons to early Pat Metheny (As Witchita Falls…) and Ottmar Liebert are certainly valid by most any standard one could measure Jakubowicz’s immeasurable talent.

This Berklee College graduate immersed himself in a myriad of styles with the end result being a sound that transcends the self imposed limitations of genre that critics and label executives seem all to willing to place on someone else’s work. In 2012 Feelings was credited by Jazz Wrap as one of the best releases for that particular year. The Polish Independent label Multikulti Project released Feelings which is an incredible display of what ebb and flow truly means. A sound scape of Brazilian, classical and the lighter side of modern jazz, Feelings can be though of as that rare release that can be enjoyed on a multitude of levels and by an incredibly diverse audience.

Some of the tunes catching my attention included “Feelings” opening with the somewhat melancholy bowing of the double bass only to be carefully broken by the pristine vocals of Axmo. Guitarist Jakubowicz offers the perfect counterpoint while subtle nuances from harpist Cecylia Matysik-Ignys blend in harmonious union with double bassist Marcin Oles. The refreshing and open ended presentation works incredibly well due to the fact guitarist Jakubowicz never over stays his welcome nor monopolizes the time he takes center stage, a true improvisational collective on equal footing. “Blue Rose” opens with an angular punctuation from bassist Oles which moves seamlessly into another wondrous display of the zen like quality of less is more from Jakubowicz. “Si Ceng Xiang Shi” features the lovely Chinese vocals of Axmo as the collective eases out of the release with as much precision and artistic flair as they did with the opening tune “Travel Memories.”

This is a prime example of some of the incredible music the American audience continues to miss out on due to virtually all platforms turning a seemingly collective blind eye to the plethora of talent that Europe has to offer.
One of the finest recordings I have been privileged to hear.

With a lovely and highly passionate tone, Polish guitarist, Marek Jakubowicz delivers an album of straightforward themes in Feelings.
With qualities that remind me of Martin Taylor, Ottmar Liebert, Pat Metheny and Paco De Lucia, Jakubowicz aptly moves between Brazilian, classical and light modern jazz with ease. A gentle and easy session that is enjoyable on multiple levels.

Two bewitching pieces open Feelings, “Before You Were Born” and “Behind The Scene” with colourful shades of classical and jazz introspection. “Before You Were Born” has the feel of time passing. It’s a journey through the opening of life and the path we decide to choose. The piece is punctuated by Matysik-Ignys sweet exchanges with Jakubowicz. While “Behind The Scene” explores a more romantic jazz tone as the versitile Oles bends the bass and Jakubowicz find affectionate tones that transform this above just a standard piece.

The title track is perfectly executed with Oles and Axmo adding hauntingly beautiful lines and lyrics that compliment the guitarist rich notes. Axmo’s voice is raspy and echoes like Enya but sits nicely among Jakubowicz’s composition. “Si Ceng Xiang Shi” is a ballad with Asian Pacific character that arches high thanks to Axmo vocals. “Travel Memories” closes this session in elegant form. Very tight passages by Oles and Jakubowicz that are pristine and well focused.

Album gitarzysty Marka Jakubowicza znalazł się wśród trzech tuzinów płyt uznanych przez amerykański blog JazzWrap za najlepsze w 2012 roku.
Recenzent porównał jego kunszt do Martina Taylora, Ottmara Lieberta, Pata Metheny’ego i Paco De Lucii. To sukces, bo polskie płyty rzadko są zauważane w USA, chyba że wyda je ECM albo Summitt, jak w przypadku Włodka Pawlika.

Marek Jakubowicz jest absolwentem Berklee College of Music, członkiem Gypsy Jazz Academy. Uczył się gry na gitarze klasycznej, jazzowej, poznał styl cygański. "Feelings" jest jego drugim albumem. Znalazły się na nim nastrojowe, zrelaksowane kompozycje zagrane z czułością i wirtuozerią.
Muzyka Jakubowicza pobudza wyobraźnię. Została napisana i wykonana z wyrazistym przesłaniem, choć zapewne każdy słuchacz dopasuje sobie własne obrazy do tych melodii. Gitarzyście akompaniuje głęboki, poruszający najgłębsze zakamarki duszy kontrabas Marcina Olesia.

Większą część albumu "Feelings" grają tylko w duecie, ale kiedy pojawia się harfa Cecylii Matysik-Ignyś, to jakby nad misternie wykreowanym krajobrazem pojawiało się słońce. W tytułowym utworze ujmującą partię wokalną wykonała po chińsku Axmo, a Marcin Oleś sugestywnie pociągnął smykiem po strunach kontrabasu.

This album comes as a surprise! Marcin Oleś is a double bassist who up to this moment was associated with top free jazz and avantgarde projects in Polish jazz. This is his first (at least as far as I know) trip outside this genre since this music is nothing else than smooth jazz. This was really very brave or even risky decision by Oleś! But with this recording Marcin proves that his talent can shine in every set-up, even in esthetics which is mostly identified with shallow, simplified and uninspiring sounds. Certainly it is not as challenging as Oleś albums recorded with Theo Jorgensmann, Kenny Werner, Chris Speed or Rudi Mahall. Yet Oleś dialogues with guitarist Marek Jakubowicz supported by harpist Cecylia Matysik-Ignys and vocalist nicknamed Axmo are elegant and engaging. The strongest side of this album is beauty of the sound: it is deep, refined, careful. Though I am not a fan of smooth jazz I must admit this CD is one of best efforts on this field in Polish music in recent years along with, for example, "Art of Silence" (2001) by Slow.
