Peter Beets – jeden z najlepszych pianistów jazzowych holenderskiej sceny. Absolwent Royal Conservatory w Hadze. Debiutował w wieku 14 lat występując w Amsterdamie w rodzinnym kwartecie. W 1985 roku powstało trio „The Beets Brothers”, które trzy lata później zdobyło Pall Mall Swing Award oraz nagrodę specjalną Księżnej Christiny. Trio ma na koncie setki koncertów i cztery znakomicie przyjęte przez krytykę płyty.

W roku 1996 Beets nagrał pierwszą autorską płytę z amerykańskim perkusistą Jeffem Hamiltonem. Dwa lata później zdobył w Paryżu Prix Martial Solal, a w roku następnym zwyciężył w Concours de Solistes de Jazz w Monako. W 2001 roku wydana została kolejna jego płyta „New York Trio”, nagrana z udziałem znakomitej amerykańskiej sekcji: Rodney Whitaker (bas) i Willie Jones III (bębny). Dwa lata później ukazał się jego kolejny amerykański album „NY Trio Page 2” nagrany z Larrym Grenadierem i Willie’m Jonesem III, a w 2005 „NY Trio Page 3” z Reginaldem Vealem i Herlin Rileyem. Następną płytą Petera Beetsa był album nagrany w kwartecie (Jo Cohn, Reuben Rogers i Ruud Jacobs), a zaraz po nim ukazał się również podwójny album koncertowy pt. „Live At The Concertgeouw”.

W swej dotychczasowej karierze Peter Beets występował m.in. z takimi sławami jak: Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roy Hargrove, Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller oraz w duecie z Chickiem Coreą. Akompaniował wokalistkom, jak Deborah Brown, Dee Daniels, Rita Reys i Lils Macintosh.

Nie bez kozery Peter Beets nazywany jest następcą Oscara Petersona. Wykonywana przez niego muzyka to klasyczny, pełen swingu jazz, oszałamiająca wirtuozeria, no i nieśmiertelne standardy. Ale od lat jest on również zafascynowany muzyką Fryderyka Chopina i najnowszy jego album to druga płyta w całość dedykowana muzyce polskiego kompozytora.

Interpretacje Beetsa, dalekie on klasycznego kanonu, ukazują piękno i uniwersalność muzyki Chopina, a ich koncertowy charakter, gdy nie da się pieścić bez końca pojedynczej frazy sprawiają, iż mamy do czynienia z żywą sztuką, czerpiąca z tradycji, ale i tworzącej ją wciąż na nowo. Piękne granie i świetna, znakomita płyta!

“The music of Chopin has always had a strong attraction for me because of the power of its melodies and harmonies. The clean and simple relation between the two creates an inviting as well as compelling urgency. Like a pearl, it doesn’t ask for attention, it just naturally gets it.

There is a resemblance with the material in the Great American Songbook, the same unchallengable necessity. Being a jazz-performer I have extensively studied the work of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin among many others and in my opinion Chopin, even without consciously having “met” the African scales and rhythms called Blues, paved the way for not only the above mentioned renowned songwriters but also for great masters of jazz improvisation as Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Barry Harris and Oscar Peterson to name a few. Chopin enriched the harmonics, wrote easily recognizable and singable melodies and when his melancholy shows in chromatic embellishments (“blue” notes) he in fact created the universal language of contemporary jazz, called Bebop. It is my sincere desire that all over the world jazzmusicians will explore the treasure-chest filled with the works of the classical composers in an endeavour to implement these gifts in their musical expression.

On this CD you will hear six live tracks of three different concerts I gave with the trio. I hope and trust you will enjoy my honest tribute to Chopin.”
