Legendarny kubański pianista, bandleader, kompozytor i aranżer Chucho Valdés, znany jest przede wszystkim jako założyciel słynnej grupy Irakere, będącej ikoną latynoskiego jazzu lat 70-tych, z której wywodzą się również tak znani muzycy jak Paquito D'Rivera i Arturo Sandoval. Jeszcze przed utworzeniem w 1973 roku Irakere, Chucho Valdés prowadził formację Jazz Batá opartą na koncepcji małego eksperymentalnego składu pozbawionego typowego zestawu perkusyjnego. 77-letni dziś pianista postanowił powrócić do formuły sprzed ponad 45 lat w otoczeniu młodych muzyków pochodzących z regionu Guantánamo w osobach: Yelsy'ego Heredii, Dreisera Durruthy Bombalé i Yaroldy'ego Abreu Roblesa, oraz zapraszając w roli gościa znakomitą skrzypaczkę Reginę Carter.

Zarówno tytuł albumu: "Jazz Batá 2", jak i cała koncepcja silnie nawiązują do projektu z 1972 roku. To już jednak inna epoka muzyczna, zatem utwory zrealizowano nie tylko z uwzględnieniem współczesnych możliwości studyjnych, ale poprzez pryzmat współczesnych trendów i nurtów obowiązujących w muzyce jazzowej XXI wieku.
Osiem autorskich kompozycji Valdésa, silnie eksponuje południowe rytmy i gorący kubański temperament artysty. Nasączona silnie zaakcentowanym rytmem, a jednocześnie sporą dawką liryzmu muzyka, obfituje w mnóstwo wirtuozowskich partii fortepianu, osadzonych na tle znakomitej gry pozostałych instrumentalistów.
W poszczególnych utworach odnajdziemy nawiązania do muzyki plemiennej (chwalący potęgę boga mądrości i sprawiedliwości "Obatalá" i odnoszący się do mistycznej istoty "El Güije"), estetyki kubańskiego bolera ("Luces"), kolorystyki haitańskiego folkloru ("Ochún"), czy tanga ("100 Anos de Bebo" z genialną partią przewodnią Reginy Carter).

Prawdziwą kulminacją całego albumu jest oparty na fortepianowych improwizacjach "Chucho's Mood", podczas którego pianista cytuje m.in. motywy z utworów Dave'a Brubecka i nieśmiertelnej kompozycji swego słynnego ojca Bebo Valdésa "Con Poco Coco".

Rolę stylowego zakończenia tej muzycznej przygody jest zagrana solo "The Clown". To kompozycja dedykowana geniuszowi Maurice'a Ravela, którą Valdés napisał jeszcze w latach 60-tych z myślą o prowadzonej wówczas przez niego formacji Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna.

Wydany po pięciu latach od czasu ostatniej studyjnej płyty, nowy album Chucho Valdésa "Jazz Batá 2", to nie tylko skomplikowane afrykańskie podziały rytmiczne, podane w swingującej konwencji. To także materiał udowadniający, iż wypracowana w latach 70-tych przez pianistę formuła africanismo, ma się całkiem dobrze w zetknięciu z obecnie panującymi trendami muzycznymi.

Jazz Batá 2, composer, pianist and bandleader Chucho Valdés’ first album for Mack Avenue Records, marks a new peak of creativity for the artist, even as it revisits the small-group concept of his 1972 Cuban album Jazz Batá. Recorded in two and a half days at John Lee’s studio in New Jersey, Jazz Batá 2 is both rhythmic and lyrical at once. The six-hand complexity of the batá repertoire – the deep classical music of West Africa – permeates Valdés’ piano solos throughout the album. “I applied to my solos the different rhythms of the batá,” he says. “The piano is of course a harmonic instrument, but it’s percussive too, and you can play percussion with it.” Jazz Batá 2 also marks the centenary of Valdés’ father and teacher, Ramón “Bebo” Valdés (1918-2013). These two giants of Cuban music shared a birthday– October 9 – so Bebo’s 100th will be Chucho’s 77th. Between the two of them, they’ve exercised a massive musical influence since the 1940s. This stretch of time reinforces the enduring and magnificent career Valdés has cultivated over the 77 years of his life, with no signs of slowing down.

With Jazz Bata 2, composer pianist and bandleader Chucho Valdes finally follows up on an experimental album he cut in Cuba in 1972. The subject matter of both records is the folklore and religious beliefs of the Yoruba slaves shipped to the Caribbean between 1770 and 1840.

On Jazz Bata 2 Valdés' piano is backed by Dreiser Darruthy Bombale, playing various batá, double-headed drums shaped like hourglasses with one end larger than the other, used in Yoruba religious rituals. The album opens with "Obatala," which Valdés describes as a mini-suite dedicated to the Yoruba god of wisdom and justice. Valdés says, "Yelsy Heredia's bowed-bass solo has a spiritual dimension, played as if calling the ancestors." Yelsy and Bombale both hail from the Guantánamo region of Cuba. They grew up together, went through music school together, graduated together, and have been playing music side-by-side ever since.

"Son XXI" is a peculiar mixture. It starts with a section Valdés calls "half Cecil Taylor, half Muhal Richard Abrams." This leads into a composition by the late Cuban composer Enrique Ubieta, which Valdés first performed in 1963. "Luces" (Lights), on the other hand, was composed only two weeks before the recording session. It lays claim to being the first-ever bolero to be played with congas and batá.

"Ochun" is a Yoruba deity representing feminine beauty and patron saint of the Osun River in Nigeria. Because of her love of sweet music, Valdés recruited Regina Carter to serenade the goddess on violin—a refreshing change of instrumentation. "Chucho's Mood" grew out of a Cuban jam session, or descarga. It contains an amusing quote from Billy Strayhorn's "Take The A-Train."

Valdés pays tribute to his father, Ramón "Bebo" Valdés, a towering figure in Cuban music, celebrating his centenary, with "100 Anos De Bebo" (100 Years Of Bebo). The song, largely written by Bebo, is played by Regina Carter. Valdés Junior says of it, "No one's heard this tune. I'm the only person who knows it. When I was a child, Bebo played it on the piano at home. Just a tune, very beautiful, and as many times as he played it, it always captured my attention."
