The session issued on the Groovy LP (originally produced by the long defunct Jazzline label) was initially intended as trombonist Willie Wilson's debut as a leader. This explains why he is featured as the only horn on two songs despite being in the company of such superb musicians as Freddie Hubbard, Pepper Adams and Duke Pearson. However, both the album and Wilson were ill-fated. The album would be issued under the name of the group's best selling artist Freddie Hubbard, and Wilson would die in 1963, shortly after these recordings were made. Hubbard, who was 23-years old by the time of this session, had begun his recording career in 1957 when he participated on the LP The Montgomery Brothers and Five Others. In the following years he would appear as a sideman on albums by John Coltrane (The Believer), Paul Chambers, Slide Hampton, Eric Dolphy (Outward Bound), Charlie Persip, Tina Brooks, J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, and Quincy Jones, among others.
