Editor's Info:
Although this performance in Sweden was presented by the famous jazz promoter Norman Granz as part of his Jazz at the Philharmonic format, this concert clearly departs from the usual jam session scheme. In fact, it consists of two rather intimate separate sets. The first part showcases the splendid trumpeter Roy Eldridge leading an All Star sextet featuring violinist Stuff Smith, drummer Jo Jones and the Oscar Peterson trio. The second part of the concert is the long Ella Fitzgerald set, in which she is accompanied solely by the rhythm section, but with her pianist, Don Abney, replacing Peterson. Among the many highlights are her powerful readings of "Angel Eyes", "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Love for Sale". "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" is a showcase piece for Ella's outstanding gifts of mimicry, as she humorously (and effectively) imitates both Rose Murphy's and Louis Armstrong's voices and singing styles. The final number, a vigorous version of "It Don't Mean a Thing", brings Roy Eldridge and Stuff Smith back on stage. Once Ella sings the lyrics and improvises as if her voice were (and it certainly was) another instrument, Stuff Smith, Don Abney, Herb Ellis and Roy Eldridge perform solos.
