In Toronto and environs our premier jazz guy on radio (CJRT FM and now Jazz FM 91) has been Ted O?Reilly and his program, The Jazz Scene. For 37 years, starting in May 1965, his program is what ALL of us have held on to through 26 years of live Science Centre Concerts (10 per year) and over 300 recordings for radio broadcasts from, at the beginning Café des Copains, later at the Montreal Bistro and many other venues all over town. The interviews on his Saturday morning program were the best that anyone has ever heard. Several with Bill Evans, Barney Kessel, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington (with his charisma showing, ie, naked!), Buddy Rich (who wouldnt leave!), and Eubie Blake were some of the highlights that enlightened and entertained us. He even interviewed Ed Bickert once! They were often an hour or more, with musical interludes, no commercials, and Ted's intelligent and informed questions. What a treat!
