- holenderski pianista i kompozytor. Urodził się w 1935 r. w Kijowie, na Ukrainie – wówczas części sowieckiego imperium. Jego rodzice mieli muzyczne wykształcenie, matka była harfistką, a ojciec, Karel Mengelberg, był dyrygentem i kompozytorem. Kiedy pod koniec lat 30. klimat polityczny stalinowskiej Rosji stał się zbyt niebezpieczny, rodzina Mengelbergów wyemigrowała do Holandii.
Misha jako pięciolatek rozpoczął naukę fortepianu. Przez krótki czas studiował architekturę, by już całkowicie poświęcić się studiom muzycznym w Królewskim Konserwatorium w Hadze, pod okiem kompozytora Keesa van Baarena. W tym czasie młody adept kompozycji i fortepianu zafascynował się ruchem artystycznym Fluxus. Jego utwór Musica per 17 strumenti zdobył główną nagrodę prestiżowego konkursu Gaudeamus Music Week w 1961 r. Inspirował się Johnem Cage’em (doszło nawet do prywatnego spotkania z tym amerykańskim kompozytorem).
Jego pierwsze fascynacje to Duke Ellington i Thelonious Monk. Dzięki rosnącej renomie bywał zapraszany jako sideman odwiedzających Holandię amerykańskich gwiazd, jak Johnny Griffin, a także Eryk Dolphy. Jeden ze wspólnych koncertów z Dolphy’m został nagrany i wydany pod tytułem „Last Date” (1964). Perkusistą na tym albumie był jego przyjaciel i częsty towarzysz muzycznych awantur – Han Bennink. Wkrótce obaj założyli Misha Mengelberg Quartet, który uzupełnił saksofonista Piet Noordijk, a funkcję basisty pełniło kilku lokalnych muzyków. W tym składzie nagrał swój debiutancki album podczas słynnego festiwalu w Newport (1966).
Pod koniec dekady lat 60. wspólnie z Hanem Benninkiem i saksofonistą Willemem Breukerem założył pionierską grupę awangardowego europejskiego jazzu ICP (Instant Composers Pool).
Wkrótce Mengelberg wraz z Benninkiem zostali kluczowymi muzykami rodzącej się sceny europejskiej free-improvisation. Grywali w różnych konstelacjach z takimi artystami jak m.in.. Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Paul Rutheford, Alexander von Schlippenbach, John Tchicai, a także Amerykanin Anthony Braxton.
W 1972 r. Misha został dyrektorem artystycznym STEIM – The Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, wokół którego grupowali się artyści zainteresowali eksperymentami z instrumentarium elektronicznym, wywodzący się zarówno ze sceny muzyki współczesnej, jak i jazzowej awangardy. Na początku lat 70. doszło do rozłamu w ICP – Breuker odszedł z kilkoma instrumentalistami i stworzył Willem Breuker Kollektief, a pozostali muzycy założyli ICP Orchestra istniejącą – w zmiennym składzie – do dziś.
Misha Mengelberg nagrał dziesiątki płyt zarówno solo na fortepianie, jak i w towarzystwie swojego tria, kwartetu, sekstetu, w duecie z Hanem Benninkiem, a także w rozmaitych europejsko-amerykańskich składach. Częstym gościem na jego płytach byli m.in.. Amerykanie Steve Lacy, George Lewis, w późniejszych latach także Joey Baron, Dave Douglas, czy Ken Vandermark. Nie było praktycznie żadnego muzyka z czołówki europejskiego free-improvu, który nie grałby z Mengelbergiem, płyty z nim nagrywali tacy artyści jak m.in.. Pino Minafra, Yuri Honing, Ab Baars, Mats Gustafsson, a także południowoafrykański saksofonista Dudu Pukwana. Szerokim echem odbiła się seria nagrań utworów Herbie’ego Nicholsa, dzięki nim utwory tego – popadającego już nieco w zapomnienie – amerykańskiego kompozytora i pianisty wróciły na światowe sceny.

Yuri Honing bio:
From the very start saxophonist Yuri Honing entered the jazz scene in the early nineties, he found new ways to move people with his slightly melancholic sound and crystal clear constructions he uses for his improvisations. He started playing a/o with his famous Yuri Honing Trio - which celebrates its 15 th anniversary in 2005 - but also with highly acclaimed Dutch artists such as pianist Michiel Borstlap, trumpet player Eric Vloeimans and saxophonist Benjamin Herman.

The year 1996 is a turning point in Honing's career when he and his trio recorded 'Star Tracks', consisting of jazz arrangements of pop songs. This release caused a momentum: national and international press praised him not only for his capabilities as a saxophone player, but he was also considered one of the new leading voices in jazz. And Honing's interests went beyond jazz and pop, while improvising freely with legendary pianist Misha Mengelberg (their duo CD 'Playing' was nominated for an Edison Jazz Award, the Dutch version of the Grammy) or even exploring new grounds with virtuoso musicians from the Middle East. With this last experiment, Honing made the music of the Arab world accessible and recorded it.

The CD 'Orient Express' received favourable reviews, reached unconventional sales figures and also was nominated for an Edison. American pianist Paul Bley was so impressed by what he heard, that he suggested Honing to do a quartet recording with bass player Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian. 'Seven' was released in 2001 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, where Honing performed with Paul Bley and bassist Charlie Haden. Later that year the album was awarded with the Edison. In the same year, Honing recorded 'Memory Lane', a ballad album that shows Honing's lyrical side. For this project he invited some of the finest musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to create a large ensemble with strings, wood and rhythm. In 2003 world famous guitarist Pat Metheny, Artist in Residence at the North Sea Jazz Festival, chose Honing to play with him and bassist Scott Colley, playing originals by Honing and Metheny. In 2005 Yuri Honing and guitarist Vince Mendoza joined hands for an exciting new project with the Metropole Orchestra. The CD release thereof is planned for Spring 2006. Next to that Honing focuses all his attention on his new electric quartet, called Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, consisting of his trio and featuring the famous German avant-garde guitarist Frank Möbus.
