Half Note Records zostało założone w 1998 roku przez nowojorski Blue Note Jazz Club. Od tego czas wydało wiele nagradzanych płyt, by wymienić Paquito D'Rivera 'Live at the Blue Note', która otrzymała Latin Grammy Award za Best Latin Jazz Album in 2001.
Wiele nagrań uzyskało nominację do Grammy, jak Gil Goldstein 'Under Rousseau's Moon', Conrad Herwig 'The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter and Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles Davis' czy Omar Sosa Sextet 'Across the Divide: A Tale of Rhythm & Ancestry'.

Donald Harrison, Ron Carter & Billy Cobham Trio 'New York Cool: Live at the Blue Note' to płyta muzyków grających ze sobą wielokrotnie, także dokładnie w tym trio. Tak zaprogramowane trio bardzo rzadko przeżywa dłużej niż sezon. Dlaczego?, Dlatego, że zespół bez nominalnego lidera najczęściej rozbija się o rafę ambicji, własnych interesów, braku determinacji... Dlatego, że takie All-Stars Bandy najczęściej są wymysłami wpływowych promotorów, organizatorów festiwali, co rzadko działa na korzyść muzyki.
Jednak oni grają już drugą dekadę, pierwsze ich nagranie to 'Heroes' z 2004 roku dla Nagel-Hayer. To najlepszy dowód, że ten skład ma bardzo wiele do zaproponowania!

Siedem utworów, z których kompozycje własne Donalda Harrisona brzmią najlepiej, to doskonały materiał na standardy jazzowe. Słychać w nich fascynację dokonaniami Ornette'a Colemana z istnymi korkociągami zmian melodycznych, ciągle jednak w bluesowym idiomie.
Smakowicie brzmi także jazzowy klasyk 'Body And Soul', tutaj pełen autentycznej czułości ale też nieuchwytnej elektryczności wykonania.

Muzycy grają ze sobą tak długo, że nawet tworzą podobnie. Mając do siebie bezgraniczne zaufanie, każdy z nich w końcu to mistrz w swojej kategorii, z wielką swobodą i radością tworzą bardzo inteligentną muzykę, a przy tym z charakterem, co zawsze jest interesujące. A przy tym wytwarzają świetną, pełną luzu atmosferę, w której porywające solówki poszczególnych muzyków są doskonałym dopełnieniem.

This trio struck a nice accord three years ago on Donald Harrison's CD Heroes (Nagel-Hayer, 2004), and it has since deepened. They excel at giving jazz warhorses tasteful makeovers; such is the case with "Body and Soul," where drummer Billy Cobham and bassist Ron Carter ignite a tight, bossa nova groove underneath Harrison's flinty melodicism, and "I'll Remember April," which shimmies between swing and a samba.

More engaging, however, are Harrison's originals. His "Harrisburg Address" hints at Ornette Coleman--the melody alternates between corkscrew phrases and bluesy swagger--and "Blues for Happy People" aims straight at the gut as the alto saxophonist powers his testifying sermon over Cobham and Carter's slow grind. Carter also contributes an engaging tune with "Third Plane," a capricious midtempo excursion noted by a halting melody, deftly animated by Harrison's wailing yet lissome phrasing and propelled by Cobham's crackling snare and Carter's sturdy walking bass line. With all egos in check, these three giants bring their A game to the stage and deliver a performance that's as casual as it compelling.

Altoist Donald Harrison gained his initial fame in the late '70s when he was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, following that up by co-leading a notable quintet with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. Although he never quite became a poll winner or a major influential force, Harrison has always been a solid improviser. New York Cool moves his career up a notch and is one of his finest recordings to date. Reuniting in 2005 with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Cobham (the trio had recorded Heroes for the Nagel Heyer label in 2002), Harrison and his sidemen constantly challenge each other, with each of the musicians feeling free to set the direction of the performances. The repertoire is comprised of "Body and Soul," "Harrisburg Address" (based on "I Got Rhythm"), "Easy Living," "I'll Remember April," "Star Eyes," Ron Carter's "Third Plane" (which deserves to become a standard), and the medium-tempo "Blues for Happy People." The musicians feed off each other's ideas and their interplay is full of subtle surprises and unpredictable moments. New York Cool demonstrates that there is plenty of life still to be found in bebop standards when they are played in creative fashion.
