Jean 'Toots' Thielmans urodził się w 1922 roku w Brukseli. Jego pierwszym instrumentem był akordeon, ale mając 17 lat zamienił go na harmonijkę ustną i gitarę. To także lista osób, z którymi w trakcie swej długiej, bo trwającej ponad 60 lat kariery, współpracował Toots Thielemans - flamandzki mistrz gry na harmonijce ustnej, świetny gitarzysta. Jego życie składa się z samych paradoksów. Jest artystą mało znanym, a przecież nie ma chyba na świecie osoby, która chociażby raz nie słyszała jego olśniewającego solo na harmonijce w słynnym Moon River z filmu "Śniadanie u Tiffany'ego". Pierre Barre & Thierry Loreau wyreżyserowali film "Toots Thielemans - Legenda jazzu - Niezwykle losy pewnego chłopaka z Brukseli" prezentujący osobę Tootsa Tielemansa i niezwykłe zjawisko, jakim jest jego muzyka.

Właśnie ukazujące się wznowienie jednaj z jego najsłynniejszych płyt "The Soul of Toots Thielemans" jest doskonałym przypomnieniem pierwszego etapu jego niezwykłej kariery. Nagrany w kwartecie z Rayem Bryantem, Tommym Bryantem oraz Oliverem Jacksonem album przyniósł Thielemansowi niezwykłe uznanie w Stanach Zjednoczonych rok później, gdy płyta ujrzała światło dzienne. Materiał tutaj jest znakomicie zremasterowany oraz uzupełniony o kwartetowe nagrania z lat 1955-1958, m.in. z Hankiem Jonsem i Artem Taylorem.

Although he was born Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor Baron Thielemans, on April 29, 1922 in Brussels, Belgium, he has become famous under the moniker "Toots" Thielemans. He is 88-years old at this writing, and is a brilliant guitar player as well as a fine whistler. He is best known, however, for his superlative harmonica playing. Toots is widely regarded as one of the greatest harmonica players of the 20th Century and probably the only truly well known jazzman on that instrument. Thielemans moved to the United States in 1952, where he soon became a member of Charlie Parker's All-Stars and worked with Miles Davis and Dinah Washington. He played and recorded with giants like Ella Fitzgerald, Jaco Pastorius, Peggy Lee, the George Shearing Quintet, Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, The Happenings, Astrud Gilberto, Shirley Horn, Elis Regina and others. He also recorded a number of albums under his own name, and composed at least one major hit: "Bluesette", which was first recorded in 1962. The Quartet album The Soul of Toots Thielemans was recorded seven years after going to America and featured Toots with pianist Ray Bryant, the pianist's elder brother Tommy Bryant on bass, and drummer Oliver Jackson. By that time, Toots had already made various sessions as a leader.

It features the celebrated Belgian harmonica and guitar player in a quartet format with the brothers Ray Bryant on piano and Tommy Bryant on bass, plus Oliver Jackson on drums. As a bonus, we have added two quartet sessions by Thielemans in their entirety. The first completes all of his recordings with Ray Bryant, while the second features the great Hank Jones on piano in his only quartet date ever with Toots.

With pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Tommy Bryant and drummer Oliver Jackson completing the quartet, Thielemans is in excellent form introducing two of his originals and jamming such tunes as 'You Are My Sunshine', 'Nuages' and 'Confirmation'.
