Editor's info:
Born Nathaniel Adderley in Tampa, Florida, on November 25, 1931 (he died on January 2, 2000 in Lakeland, Florida), cornet and trumpet player Nat Adderley's fame was somewhat obscured by that of his brother, alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Both musicians played in the hard bop and soul jazz genres, and Nat was a member of his brother's quintet for many years. Besides recording as a sideman for other leaders (including his brother), Nat also made various albums as a leader during the 1950s and 1960s. Work Song was one of his most popular albums (in great part due to the title track that opens the album and has become a jazz standard). It was Nat's sixth LP under his own name, following That's Nat (1955), Introducing Nat Adderley (1955), To the Ivy League (1956), Branching Out (1958), and Much Brass (1959). On the second and third albums he was backed by his brother Cannonball. Work Song was Nat's second collaboration with guitarist Wes Montgomery. The two musicians had previously participated together on singer Jon Hendricks 1959 LP A Good Git Together (along with Cannonball and Wes' brother Monk Montgomery). They wouldn't record together again after Work Song. However, Wes would record another album with Cannonball on May-June 1960, titled Cannonball Adderley & The Poll Winners.

****Original Down Beat review: Work Song
"This album is as warm, fresh and sunny as a summer's day in the back country. It's earthy without being muddy, sophisticated but not phony.
Recommended strongly" (Don DeMicheal)

****1/2 All Music Guide: Work Song
"A near-classic by cornetist Nat Adderley. Utilizing a cornet-cello-guitar front line along with a top-notch rhythm section, Adderley performs a fine
early version of his greatest hit ('Work Song'). No matter the setting, Nat Adderley is heard throughout in peak form, playing quite lyrically. Highly
recommended." (Scott Yanow)

***1/2 Down Beat original review: Movin' Along
"This is Montgomery's session, and the opening solos fall to him. A compelling guitarist, he motivates a drive unleavened by essentially
melodic ideas. His tone is solid, sure, and large, radiating self-assurance in what he wants to do." (John A. Tynan)
