Ten angielski saksofonista (rocznik 1966) od początku swojej muzycznej drogi miał wielkie szczęście do współpracowników. Jego pierwsza autorska płyta "Phaedrus" (Ah Um 1990), nagrana została z doskonałym pianistą Johnem Taylorem. Druga z kolei "Home Truths" (babel label 1995), to kwartetowe nagranie ze Steve'm Swallowem.

Nagrywał i koncertował z całą plejadą jazzowych osobowości jak Archie Shepp, Tim Berne, Gavin Bryars, Bill Frisell, Alexander Balanescu, Hermeto Pascoal, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, Chris McGregor, Evan Parker, John Scofield, Carla Bley, Dudu Pukwana, Steve Swell, czy Giorgio Gaslini.

Ostatnie lata przyniosły kolejne doskonałe nagrania - "The Behemoth" Phronesis / Julian Argüelles / Frankfurt Radio Big Band (Edition Records 2017), "Ground Rush" Julian Argüelles / Michael Formanek / Tom Rainey (Clean Feed 2010), "Setembro (Norway focus)" Mario Laginha / Julian Arguelles / Helge Andreas Norbakken (Edition Records 2017), "Requiem For A Dreamer" John Taylor / Julian Arguelles / Palle Danielson / Martin France (CAM Jazz 2011).

Nowy kwartet Arguellesa, z pianistą słynnego Phronesis - Ivo Neame'm, to zespół złożony z bogatych artystycznych osobowości, jednak tutaj wszyscy myślą tylko kolektywnie. I w tym właśnie tkwi największa siła tego zespołu.
Wydany właśnie nakładem angielskiej oficyny Edition Records album "Tonadas", ukazuje w twórczym zwarciu europejskich instrumentalistów, potrafiących zachować balans pomiędzy kameralistyczną nostalgią a artystyczną witalnością. Od utworów porywających rześką rytmiką, poprzez melancholijne i fantastyczne melodie, które głęboko zapadają w pamięć, po tchnące tą wyjątkową kameralną delikatnością, która potrafi osiągać hipnotyzujący efekt. Jest to muzyka, która zadaje więcej pytań, niż podsuwa odpowiedzi. Być może to właśnie jest największą wartością europejskiego jazzu.

Drawing on his Spanish roots Argüelles has produced a gem – a beautifully warm, harmonically rich and melodic album, abundant with an elegant tone and absorbing colour.
