Wrzesień to miesiąc szczególny, to wtedy lato przechodzi w jesień, ziemia po wydaniu człowiekowi plonów przechodzi w stan uśpienia. Trójka wyśmienitych instrumentalistów, portugalski pianista Mario Laginha, angielski saksofonista Julian Arguelles i norweski perkusista Helge Andreas Norbakken nagrali płytę, przesyconą aurą transgresji.
Nie ma co pisać na temat artystycznych kompetencji muzyków, to bez wątpienia czołówka europejska. Z połączenia ich wrażliwości i wyobraźni narodził się album o wysublimowanej urodzie i charakterze.
Ciepła barwa fortepianu Mário Laginhi, kontrolowana energia perkusisty Helge Andreasa Norbakkena oraz liryzm i angielski romantyzm Juliana Argüellesa wiążą muzyczną narrację w jednorodną, skrzącą się wieloma barwami opowieść. Co ważne, trzy odmienne osobowości słuchają się nawzajem, ze świadomością wspólnego celu kreślą pewną ręką wrześniowe pejzaże, prezentując dojrzałe kompozycje i odważne improwizacje.
"Setembro (Norway focus)" wypełniają kompozycje pełne inwencji, o stonowanym charakterze, naznaczone kameralistycznym piętnem, mające w rezultacie hipnotyzującą moc.
Co rusz trafiamy na ciekawą aranżację, zaskakująca zmianę tempa i intrygująco prowadzony temat, podnoszący temperaturę muzyki.
Wydany właśnie nakładem angielskiej oficyny Edition Records album, ukazuje w twórczym zwarciu europejskich instrumentalistów, potrafiących zachować balans pomiędzy kameralistyczną nostalgią a artystyczną witalnością. Być może to właśnie jest największą wartością europejskiego jazzu.

‘Setembro’ is the brilliantly conceived and executed album from three supremely gifted and creative musical minds in Portuguese pianist Mário Laginha, English saxophonist Julian Argüelles and Norwegian percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken. Their combined maturity and vision has produced an album of sublime beauty and personality distinguished by effortless and flowing creativity. With propulsive grooves, complex but ever-lyrical melodies, and open-minded interaction ‘Setembro’ demonstrates the vitality and importance of what is great about contemporary jazz in Europe.

Collectively the trio is able to surmount even these individual parts. The warmth of Mário Laginha’s pianism, the percussive energy of Helge Andreas Norbakken and the lyricism and English romanticism of Julian Argüelles bond on an album that is structurally bold, improvisationally audacious, emotionally open and undeniably beautiful. Argüelles has donated two compositions but it’s Mário Laginha who takes the major writing credit with eight songs. The brilliance and inventiveness of his writing illuminates this supremely gifted pianist and composer’s talents and although he’s relatively undiscovered outside Portugal, Setembro will be sure to ignite Mário’s profile throughout Europe and the world.

Rooted in the various traditions of its members, but never less than modern, the music on the album pursues its subtle beat. Take Laginha’s Coisas de Terra. Pulsating with melodic and rhythmic intensity from the start the emphasis quickly shifts, opening a more subtle and emotive vista where the lyricism of Arguelles saxophone and an ostinato figure from the piano intertwine while Norbakken spatters expansive colours from his uniquely diverse percussive setup.

The music is episodic and full of the delights of exploration viewed through the charisma of these great players. With Mário Laginha taking the majority of compositional credit, the aptly titled, Setembro, is an album that explodes in the warmth and energy of a Portuguese late summer in a celebration of what is great about European jazz today.

Some of the intuitive communion between saxophonist Julian Argüelles and the late pianist John Taylor is recalled on the radiant exchanges Argüelles and Portuguese pianist Mário Laginha share on Setembro – though Laginha’s compositions have a chemistry of communal vivacity and lyricism all of their own. Laginha is widely known for his work with his quirky vocal compatriot Maria Joao, and the improv conversations with Argüelles and softly hand-drumming Norwegian percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken exhibit comparably quick-thinking independence. Some of Laginha’s breathless dances – such as the staccato, skippy Maos na Parede or Fisicamente – stretch Argüelles’s seamless fluency on soprano and tenor saxes to the utmost, and illustrate why he’s blossomed into one of Europe’s most inventive saxophonists since his Loose Tubes beginnings. The gracefully unfolding, vamp-rooted Serralves and Argüelles’ own Hugger Mugger have a laid-back, Andy Sheppard-like warmth, the tunes are terrific, whether full-on or vaporously misty. Norbakken’s softly flappy, pattering drum sound enhances this fine set’s unique character.
