Robert Mitchell – brytyjski kompozytor, pianista i nauczyciel. Artysta totalny, który powraca do tradycji mistrzostwa twórczej pianistyki. Członek prestiżowego klubu Artystów Steinway’a, do którego należą między innymi Keith Jarrett, Ahmal Jamal, Jason Moran czy Robert Glasper.
W ciągu 20 lat działalności wydał siedem autorskich albumów, współpracował przy blisko 100 projektach, występował w ponad 30 krajach. Zdobył kilkanaście nagród m.in. BBC Jazz Awards (za innowacyjne podejście do jazzu), BBC DJ Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards (w kategorii Najlepszy album jazzowy).

Dorastał w tradycji lat 60., wchłaniając pełną gamę zachodniego klasycyzmu za pośrednictwem światowych tradycji muzycznych. Od wczesnych lat, dzięki fascynacji muzyką popularną lat 70. i 80, a także soulem, R&B, Mitchell zaczął rozwijać własne poczucie muzycznej ekspresji. Przełomem dla muzyka było zetknięcie się z legendami pianistyki jazzowej – Art Tatum i Oscarem Petersonem. Sprowokowało to młodego pianistę do zrozumienia elementów, „które uczyniły ich podejście do komponowania wyjątkowym.”

W formacji Robert Mitchell's Panacea sięga do ideału esencji jazzu, tworząc fuzję nowojorskiego hip-hopu z Bebopem i hardbopem lat 40. i 60.

The Cusp is the third album from Robert Mitchell’s Panacea and the group’s first on EDITION RECORDS. The Cusp is a negotiation of vision and territory. For pianist and composer Robert Mitchell it’s a matter of securing a space for a highly personal aesthetic. Panacea was the Greek goddess of medicine and cures. The Cusp is simultaneously modern jazz and contemporary soul music. In Mitchell’s piano one hears echoes of the harmonies of Bill Evans and the warm, Caribbean melodies of Andrew Hill, while his skilled deployment of strings suggests the intriguing influence of European art music. In the gentle and expressive tones of singer Deborah Jordan, Mitchell has found the perfect voice for his words of healing, while his rhythm team move between jazz, rock and soul with accomplished ease.
