Jeden z najważniejszych weteranów nowojorskiej sceny downtown, Elliott Sharp przygotował dedykowaną nowemu stuleciu kompilację gitarowych solistów. Od akustycznej robinsonady i gry smyczkiem, po wielościeżkowe montaże i komputerowe preparacje, od banjo po gitary barytonowe i ośmiostrunowe. Różnorodność form i środków wynika już choćby z faktu, iż do udziału zaprosił poszukujących artystów z pogranicza jazzu, wolnej improwizacji i awangardy. Wśród 16 wykonawców znaleźli się m.in. Noel Akochte, Nels Cline, Jeff Parker, Kazuhisa Uchihasi i masa artystów, którzy dopiero czekają na szersze rozpoznanie. Choć należą do różnych pokoleń i generacji ich nagrania łączy fakt, iż odległe są od zachłyśnięć technologią i efekciarskich ekstremów. Jeśliby szukać wspólnego mianownika dla całej kolekcji okaże się nią kreatywny dialog z tradycją wyzwoloną z gatunkowych ram i pełne inwencji sondowanie możliwości instrumentu. Refleksyjnie nastawia ta kolekcja.

Portugalska wytwórnia Clean Feed już po raz piąty oddaje w nasze ręce składankę prezentującą najciekawszych współczesnych gitarzystów ze świata awangardy i jazzu w swoich solowych kompozycjach. W 16 utworach zaprezentowali sie między innymi tacy muzycy jak Elliott Sharp, Henry Kaiser, Jeff Parker, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Mike Cooper, Scott Fields. Czyli ambasadorzy XI wiecznej gitary. "I NEVER META GUITAR" to płyta, która ukazuje całe spektrum możliwości podejścia do instrumentu, sposób w jaki można wpływać na jego brzmienie za pomocą efektów i elektroniki, jak i samym preparowaniem. Nie zapominając o tradycji gatunku, równocześnie będąc otwartym na "nowe". Dzięki czemu na tej płycie można usłyszeć klasyczną, gitarę jazzową z czasów Django Reinharda, stricte awangardowe improwizacje, melancholię, jak i noisowe szumy rodem z alternatywnego rocka lub post country. Szczerze - gdy usłyszałem o płycie prezentującej 16 gitarzystów - pomyślałem, że będzie to kolejna składanka typu "bogowie gitary", czyli szybko, technicznie i popisowo. Coś w rodzaju wyścigów pomiędzy progami i wydawaniem trzystu dźwięków na sekundę. Na szczęście tak nie jest, co jest dużym atutem! Muzycy dając upust swej wyobraźni i kreatywności, naginają zasady klasycznego podejścia do utworów solowych i "solówek" prezentowanych miedzy innymi przez rockowych gitarzystów. Chodź płyta jest różnorodna, jest w tym jakaś myśl przewodnia, całości płyty słucha sie przyjemnie i nie ma efektu typowych składanek. Płytę można traktować jak mały przewodnik po współczesnym świecie gitarowym, jako punkt wyjścia do muzycznych poszukiwań. Elliot Sharp w liner notes napisał, że muzycy, którzy znaleźli się na tej kompilacji są "jedną nogą w przyszłości i jedną w przeszłości" - jest w tym prawda.
Pozycja obowiązkowa dla gitarowych fanów, którzy nie widzą świata poza gitarzystami w typie Patha Metheny i Jarka Śmietany - w celu poszerzenia muzycznych horyzontów oczywiście.

Curated by Elliott Sharp, this compilation presents the "state of the art" in today's guitar. Included are some of the most established pioneers, like Henry Kaiser, Jean-François Pauvros, Michael Gregory, Mike Cooper, Brandon Ross, Jeff Parker and, of course, Sharp himself, but also the new heroes of the electric or acoustic six-string instrument: Nels Cline, Raoul Bjorkenheim, Noel Akchoté, Scott Fields, and Mary Halvorson, plus some less internationally known (but no less remarkable) figures active in the domains of free improvisation and experimental music, namely Janet Feder, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Mick Barr, and Gunnar Geisse. Every idiomatic reference or influence is in the equation, from folk, blues, jazz, rock, and noise to classical contemporary, world music, lounge, and exotica, in a myriad of individual concepts showing us the very wide field of possibilities which characterizes the art of sounds in this beginning of the 21st century. As Elliott Sharp writes on his liner notes, this diversity is guaranteed by musicians who have "one foot in the future and one in the past": artists with "their ass directly in the NOW". These are the representatives of some of the most rewarding guitar music played these days for you to wonder and cherish.
