W 2019 roku Larry Ochs, jeden z założycieli Rova Saxophone Quartet skończył 70 lat. Zamiast przejść na emeryturę wrzucił szósty bieg. Owoce tego przyspieszenia są imponujące. Omawialiśmy na multikulti.com już płyty formacji The Fictive Five "Anything Is Possible" (Clean Feed 2019), Jones Jones (Larry Ochs, Mark Dresser, Vladimir Tarasov) "A Jones In Time Saves Nine" (NoBusiness Records 2018), Larry Ochs / Nels Cline / Gerald Cleaver "What Is To Be Done" (Clean Feed 2019) i Larry Ochs / Gerald Cleaver "Songs Of The Wild Cave" (Rogueart 2018).
Teraz przyszedł czas na najnowszą płytę "Continental Drift" nagraną przez Larry Ochs & Aram Shelton Quartet, a tak naprawdę przez dwa kwartety, ponieważ część materiału zarejestrowana została w 2013 (Aram Shelton, Larry Ochs, Kjell Nordeson, Mark Dresser), druga w 2018 (Marka Dressera zastąpił Scott Walton).

Drugim liderem jest Aram Shelton, saksofonista (rocznik 1974) najpierw związany ze sceną Chicago, po przeprowadzce do Kalifornii w 2005 roku częściej pojawia się w międzynarodowych projektach. W Polsce doskonale znany dzięki dwóm płytom wydanym w barwach Multikulti Project - Dragons 1976 [Aram Shelton / Jason Ajemian / Timothy Daisy] i "Hopes And Fears" kwartetu Shelton / Tarwid / Jacobson / Berre.

Obaj liderzy dobrze się znają, są w końcu częścią improwizowanej sceny San Francisco Bay Area. Przygotowali na płytę po cztery własne kompozycje, obaj dzierżą saksofony, odpowiednio Shelton na alcie i Ochs na tenorze i sopranie.
Gęsta, bogata w dźwięki narracja płynie szerokim strumieniem od samego początku, regulowana jest przez obu liderów. Słynący z absolutnej dyscypliny formalnej Larry Ochs, oszczędny i precyzyjny, trafnie dobiera brzmieniowe i teksturalne rozwiązania. Wyczucie dramaturgiczne Arama Sheltona jest tutaj wzorcowe. Shellton to nietypowy saksofonista, jak na muzyka awangardowego operuje unikalnym, bardzo lirycznym brzmieniem. Tak jest i tym razem, momenty współbrzmienia obu, tak odmiennych saksofonów są ozdobą płyty. To między innymi dlatego "Continental Drift" niesie tak wiele dobrych emocji!

Can musicians of different generations be like-minded companions? Yes they can, at least when their names are Larry Ochs and Aram Shelton, the two composers and bandleaders of this quartet. As they themselves acknowledge, “Continental Drift” is a kinetic meeting of sorts, with compositions that are designed to inspire magnificent contributions from the entire team of players, both individually and collectively. The resulting music profits greatly from each members’ individual capacities and personalities. Ochs and Shelton’s musical backgrounds are both quite varied, evidenced by their own separate pasts exploring the worlds of jazz, contemporary classical, electro-acoustic and “other” music. More than that, both have been important voices of the San Francisco Bay Area improvised music scene: Ochs being a cutting-edge Bay Area improviser since the 1970’s, while Shelton, now living in Europe, is also known for his connections to the very different Chicago scene. Each plays in his own way, but they share the same principles and look for very similar results – together creating new music with a jazz approach and an avant-garde attitude, not alienated from history.
