Portugalska, istniejąca zaledwie od 6 lat wytwórnia Clean Feed, wyrasta na jedno z najciekawszych młodych wydawnictw na światowej mapie poszukującego jazzu.
BassDrumBone tworzą postacie może nie ze ścisłego panteonu jazzowych gwiazd, ale bez wątpienia ważne: perkusista Gerry Hemingway (niegdyś partner Anthony'ego Braxtona, dziś prowadzący m.in....... Genialny Quartet i Quintet), Ray Anderson (jeden z bardziej szanowanych współczesnych puzonistów, także mający na koncie współpracę z Braxtonem, ostatnio przypomniany szerszej publiczności przez Ibrahim Electric), oraz kojarzony ze środowiskiem downtownu wszechstronny basista Mark Helias. Panowie proponują soczyste, ale przy tym niezobowiązujące, całkiem przystępne granie łączące wiele ścieżek jazzu. Sekcja z równym powodzeniem podaje hardbopowy walking cudownie przy tym swingując, jak i funkowe pochody czy bardziej współczesną pulsację. Helias niekiedy (w bardziej dynamicznych momentach) chwyta za gitarę basową, a w chwilach refleksyjnych piłuje smykiem struny kontrabasu, generując przepełnione nostalgią frazy. Błyszczy Anderson - mocarny ton łączy się u niego z potoczystością, ruchliwością, płynnością frazowania. Wykorzystuje techniki rozszerzone, zwiększając paletę barw i możliwości sonorystyczne puzonu. Dominują groove'owe, bujające tematy, jest trochę zadziornej zabawy chwytliwymi, pełnymi humoru motywami, ale i nieco lirycznego, niemal rozczulającego balladowania (ciut jednak zwichrowanego, podjętego z lekkim przymrużeniem oka).
Płyta 'The Line Up" to wspaniałe świadectwo ciągłości i żywotności jazzowej tradycji.

What a super team. A bassist associated with the best New York improvisers - Mark Helias, a drummer who has continued his meteoric rise since his stint as a member of Braxton's well-known Nineties quartet - Gerry Hemingway, and a trombonist known for his intensity and his motto, which says it all: "if I ever had a home, it was the slide trombone"- Ray Anderson. The latter's career represents very well what jazz is today - a music that's heard everything and absorbed it in some way. From Dixieland to AACM, from Mozart concertos to Broadway shows, and from John Cage to funk - especially Sly and the Family Stone - every bit of music appreciated by Anderson is reflected somehow in the jazz he plays. The newest from BassDrumBone is a hard driven, joyful manifestation of vitality of these three musicians and the music they play...music that is not dead and doesn't smell funny, to misquote a Frank Zappa saying. A music that takes "the risk, the willingness, and the trust to get away beyond the limb", as Hemingway writes in the liner notes of "The Line Up". If "it's all in the music" (Ray Anderson dixit), then even those bad moments that affect one's life are dealt here with a positive attitude, and that shows in the swing that permeates these tunes. "We're still so in love with life", we read, we listen. A recording with great vibes, people...

Imagine a thirty-year professional and personal relationship with a musical colleague, add another colleague and make it a trio. That is BassDrumBone. In addition to the group relation, we have all worked in each others projects and those of numerous third parties. We have been to each others weddings, watched kids grow up, toured the world, made many recordings, discussed every aspect of our lives and philosophies...argued, cajoled and joked. Yes, the humor... the great equalizer... the forum for absurdist resonance, the communication eclipsed only by the music. Thanks to my friends Gerry and Ray. It has been my distinct honor to be the recipient of their friendship and artistry.
DRUM
I know what defines magic. It might appear as an illusion to the casual observer, but magic, for all of its ephemeral qualities, is made up of very real things. Words can't embody what it is but can at least steer us closer to where it resides. Connection is a piece, from the serendipitous first meeting to what happens after a fluid chemistry occurs. What builds out of mutual effort to create something we will never forget. Sometimes it is the swing that dances between 3/4 and 4/4 like a Bulgarian dancing the Lindyhopper's ball. Taking the risk, the willingness, and the trust to get way beyond the limb and see just what happens when those circus clowns teetering on one wheel of a barely functioning tricycle topple from cacophony to the sublime. Magic is laughter and knowing how to share it with a room full of people you have never met before. It is a resonance, which envelops us, a momentum which catches us all up, keeping us alive and grateful to be here. It is getting lost and finding the way that wasn't there before, the patience to wait for an arrival and a departure. It is the wine that untwists the tongue. I know what defines magic because I've been one of three parts of this unbelievable experience in music and life called BassDrumBone.

My God, it's been 30 years. What an incredible blessing. Remember the razor trio, Steakfish, and all those other times we laughed 'til we cried? All our arguments? All the concerts, trains, planes, vans and taxis? All the wonderful, generous people around the world? We've been married and divorced and widowed and back in love again. We've been healthy and sick. We have kids who are grown. So much heartache, so much joy. Everything changes and nothing changes. We're still so in love with life. We're still out here protesting a war! Still with that ache, that longing, that searching for the perfect note at the perfect instant in the perfect rhythm...........it's all in the music.
