'...A demented Swedish quartet playing a live gig in Finland is now recorded for posterity in the form of Exploding Customer's second release 'Live at Tampere Jazz Happening'. Really, there isn't a better way to capture the energy of this band than in a live scenario. [This is in fact the second time a live performance was captured on their record.]
Saxophonist Martin Küchen founded the group back in 1999 and together with his cohorts - trumpeter Tomas Hallonsten, bassist Benjamin Quigley and drummer Kjell Nordeson - they make up wild, wickedly hilarious music. Sure, not everyone has the same sense of humour, while some have none at all, but to my ears, this music rocks with hilarious juxtapositions.
The rompous 'Mr. BP(D)' is a joy to behold. Full of these call and response games between Küchen's alto and Hallonsten's wildly high-pitched trumpet calls, the piece reminds me of some better Sun Ra Arkestra's moments.
Further on, 'The Crying Whip' offers a sombre tenor solo from Küchen, while Hallonsten's trumpet throws up gorgeous colours all around. A gorgeous piece it is, no matter what perspective you approach it from.
Rhythm section is tight and Nordeson's heavy-handed percussion blows remind me of Rashied Ali's approach near the end of his tenure with John Coltrane. Though the piece are all composed by Küchen, the music feels extremely free and sporadically chaotic.
Exploding Customer once again succeed in making intense and highly rewarding music of the highest order...'
[Tomasz Sekowski]

Editor's Info:
Exploding Customer was first recognized by for its special type of "happy free jazz" on our CD "Live at Glenn Miller Café", aylCD-030, from 2002. We have many very satisfied buyers of this CD and there has been a continuous request for a second release. Now, it's here and we are sure that those who enjoyed "Live at Glenn Miller Café" will love this one.

Excerpts from Ken Waxman's liner notes:
"Described as one of the surprise hit of that year's festival, Exploding Customer was among heavy company when it appeared on the Tampere Jazz Happening's second day. Also on the bill were such well-regarded performers as the Cosmosamatics, the Ravi Coltrane Quartet and the Fred Anderson-Hamid Drake duo. In contrast to these overseas heavy hitters, Exploding Customer offered its own variation of what could be called Scandinavian soul music, with the inspired rhythms of drummer Kjell Nordeson, the steady pump of bassist Benjamin Quigley and the virtuoso flights of trumpeter Tomas Hallonsten and Küchen on show."
Jussi Niemi
"The band to open Old Customs House day concert on Saturday was good news. For a change a Scandinavian jazz band that doesn1t draw from 701s Miles or build national romantic views of northern mountains, but deconstructs the information overload of our time with a fleshy, bluesy, free-bop. Martin Küchen's tenor, and especially his alto, weaved together with Tomas Hallonsten's trumpet grooves and well positioned patterns resembling Ornette/Cherry power duo, as the rhythm section pulsated like a beehive. Take note of this band!"
