Quartette Indigo is one of the finest jazz string quartets of the late 1990s. Their debut recording finds the ensemble (consisting of leader Akua Dixon on cello, violinists Regina Carter and Marlene Rice, and Ron Lawrence on viola) playing a wide variety of music. The style ranges from Eubie Blake's rag "Fizz Water" and the gospel-like "This Little Light of Mine" to "So What," "Song for My Father," pieces that are classical-oriented, "Akua's Blues," and the freely improvised "Rush Hour." Swinging string ensembles are still a rarity, particularly ones where all four musicians can improvise at this high level. Highly recommended.
