"Light" to najnowszy album The Universal Quartet, będący jednocześnie kontynuacją historycznego spotkania przedstawicieli współczesnej europejskiej sceny jazzowej Kaspera Tranberga i Krestena Osgooda z amerykańskimi legendami Yusefem Lateef i Adamem Rudolphem. "Light" będzie drugą i chyba ostatnią po „The Universal Quartet and Yusef Lateef” wydanej w 2009 roku płytą tego składu. Ostatnią - bowiem sędziwy muzyk zmarł 23 grudnia 2013 roku. Pozostały pewnie po tych sesjach jakieś niepublikowane utwory, odmienne wersje kompozycji - niemniej była to ostatnia płyta powstała zgodnie z zamysłami Yuseffa Lateefa.

Andrzej Majak na multikultiproject.blogspot.com tak pisał o debiutanckiej płycie The Universal Quartet:
(...) Urodzony w 1920 roku Yusef Lateef [William Emanuel Huddleston] to legendarna postać amerykańskiego jazzu. Ten multiinstrumentalista [tenor saxophone, flute, bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, arghul, sarewa, koto] jest jednym z ostatnich, aktywnych jazzmanów z pokolenia Johna Coltrane'a. W 1950 roku po przejściu na Islam odrzucił nazwisko William Emanuel Huddleston, odtąd znamy go jako Yusefa Lateefa.
Obok Milta Jacksona, Paula Chambersa, Elvina Jonesa czy Kenny'ego Burrella tworzył scenę jazzową Detroit. W 1963 roku związał się z wytwórnią Impulse, dla której nagrywał John Coltrane. Ogromny ładunek duchowy i free jazzowa intensywność były cechą wspólną ich nagrań. Warto dodać, że płyta 'Yusef Lateef's Little Symphony' otrzymała nagrodę Grammy w 1987 roku.
Najnowsza płyta, nagrana w kwartecie z Adamem Rudolphem i młodymi lwami jazzu skandynawskiego Kasperem Tranbergiem i Krestenem Osgoodem przynosi ponad 70 minut niezwykłej muzyki o dość medytacyjnym charakterze. Dwanaście utworów, które są zaledwie zarysami kompozycji wypełnia skupiona improwizacja muzyków świadomych każdego dźwięku, szmeru . . . ciszy.
Słucham tej płyty po raz kolejny i "widzę" ją jako fascynujący, utkany z miliona pikseli obraz zaskakujący mistrzowską grą światła i cienia (...)


Istotą muzyki zawartej na „Light” są brzmienia powstałe z relacji dźwięków wytwarzanych przy użyciu naturalnych materiałów od wieków wykorzystywanych do tworzenia muzyki: drewna, skóry i metalu. A to za sprawą pokaźnego arsenału instrumentalnego, jaki usłyszymy na tej płycie: m.in. trąbka, saksofon, skrzydłówka, kornet, różnego rodzaju flety, kongi, bębny, gongi, czy instrumenty perkusyjne. Z jednej strony Lateef i Tranberg oraz Osgood i Rudolph z drugiej wykreowali wspólnie ponadczasowe dźwięki, które ukazują nasze naturalne ludzkie ograniczenia, wskazując jednocześnie na niezwykłe, nadprzyrodzone właściwości muzyki, które pozwalają wznieść się ponad wszelkie zahamowania, które w sobie nosimy. Muzycy w mistrzowski sposób udowadniają, że muzyka w swej szczodrości oddziałuje na nasze zmysły niczym doskonałe antidotum.

The Universal Quartet powstał w 2008 roku z inicjatywy skandynawskich muzyków: trębacza Kaspera Tranberga i perkusisty Kresten Osgood, którzy znani są z wielu kolaboracji m.in. z takimi muzykami, jak: Paul Bley, Sam Rivers, Marc Ducret, czy John Tchicai. Yusef Lateef legenda amerykańskiego jazzu debiutował w 1949 u boku Dizzy Gillespiego, w późniejszym czasie współpracując z jednymi z największych w świecie jazzu, wśród których przydarzyli się Count Basie, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Zawinul i Art Blakey. Lateef uważany jest za jednego z najlepszych improwizujących flecistów, a oryginalne brzmienie jego saksofonu rozpoznawalne jest na całym świecie. Dzisiaj 93-letni multiinstrumentalista nadal gra z niesłabnącą siłą, choć współpraca przy tworzeniu „Light” jest jednym z trzech studyjnych nagrań, jakich dokonał w ciągu ostatnich 13 lat, z czego dwa z The Universal Quartet. Adam Rudolph to z kolei mistrz perkusji i kompozytor. Z Lateefem współpracuje już od 25 lat, znany jest również m.in. ze współpracy z Donem Cherrym, Samem Riversem, Pharaoh Sandersem, Wadada Leo Smithem oraz z Go: Organic Orchestra i Moving Pictures, których jest liderem.

Universal Quartet was founded in August 2008 by trumpeter Kasper Tranberg and drummer Kresten Osgood – two strong voices on the European jazz scene today. With their new release “Light” released on ILK Music they continue their historic collaboration with american master musicians Adam Rudolph and Yusef Lateef.

Universal Quartet plays music composed by all four members:

“The sounds created are ancient and very contemporary at the same time - nobody in the world is making this kind of music. We call it the music for the future.”



This unique recording was recorded and produced during two days in Copenhagen. Not just a blowing session but a creative work of art with strong compositional textures, rhythmic explorations and mindblowing improvisations. Add to that a string of heartfelt “ballads” and the touching storytelling-vocal of Brother Yusef Lateef.



The musical point of departure is the relation between the sound of wood, skin and metal – an instrumentation as old as mankind. It is in the meeting between these primeral sounds that wind players Lateef and Tranberg on the one side and percussionists Osgood and Rudolph on the other creates a timeless sound that portrays both Man’s natural limitations as well as the notion that music is a supernatural entity which enables us human beings to rise above our inbred inhibitions.



Kresten Osgood and Kasper Tranberg are known for their work as sidemen in countless musical settings as well as leading their own groups and releasing a string of albums with such notables as Paul Bley, Sam Rivers, Marc Ducret, John Tchicai etc.



Yusef Lateef is unique in the history of jazz. He had his recording debut in 1949 on a session with Dizzy Gillespie and has gone on to play with many of the heaviest

innovators in jazz - like Count Basie, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Cannonball

Adderley, Joe Zawinul and Art Blakey, to name a few. Yet Lateef is an important

innovator himself. He is recognized as one of the best improvisers on the flute, while his saxophone playing is deeply original and respected throughout the world. Today Yusef Lateef is 92 years old and playing with unabated strength and creativity, but – due to his exclusiveness – he records very seldom and this is only his 3rd studio recording in 13 years, two of them with Universal Quartet !



Adam Rudolph is a master percussionist, composer and currently the most innovative bandleader around. His “Go Organic Ochestra” and “Moving Pictures Octet” are setting the standard for how creative music can be made across genres, style and culturel background. Brother Adam is also known for his work with Don Cherry, Mandingo Griot Society,Muhal Richard Abrams, Pharaoh Sanders, Yusef Lateef and many others.
