Dla uczczenia 80. urodzin Gunduli Janowitz wydawnictwo First Hand wypuściło nagranie recitalu pieśni z antycznego teatru u stóp Akropolu – Odeonu Heroda Attyka. Koncert, który odbył się 16 września 1999 roku, upamiętniał z kolei rocznicę śmierci Marii Callas (zmarłej w 1977). Nagranie to nie tylko zawiera w sobie wyjątkowo piękną muzykę, ale też jest niezwykłym dokumentem, jako ostatni recital jednej z najwybitniejszych śpiewaczek XX wieku, która takich recitali dała ponad 300, a ponadto stworzyła zapadające w ucho i pamięć kreacje w operach od Wolfganga Amadeusza Mozarta przez Giuseppe Verdiego i Richarda Wagnera po Richarda Straussa.

Znakomita technika wokalna, którą dysponowała Gundula Janowitz, pozwoliła jej wykonywać szeroki i zróżnicowany repertuar, a także na długo zachować świeżość głosu, bez straty w rozpoznawalnej barwie i brzmieniu. Na płycie dokumentującej jej ostatni recital pieśni, w którym towarzyszył jej przy fortepianie Charles Spencer, możemy usłyszeć 62-letnią artystkę w znakomitej formie. Na ten niezwykły wręcz, trwający 80 minut występ składają się poruszające, dojrzałe i dopracowane interpretacje pieśni Franza Schuberta, Roberta Schumanna i Richarda Straussa. Wyjątkowe właściwości głosu Gunduli Janowitz i wielka dyscyplina sprawiły, że stworzyła ona wiele znakomitych nagrań zarówno w studio, jak i zarejestrowanych na żywo.

Ta wybitna kreacja artystyczna przykuwa szczególną uwagę przez cały czas wykonania, ponieważ nasycona jest pełnym spektrum emocji, które nie zawsze daje się osiągnąć w nagraniach studyjnych. Janowitz to nie tylko perfekcjonistka, ale i poszukiwaczka, która nie ograniczała się do raz wypracowanych rozwiązań, lecz wciąż dążyła do reinterpretacji tego, co już raz opracowała. Wynikało to z jej maksymalizmu – rzadko bywała w stu procentach zadowolona ze swojej pracy; między innymi dzięki temu większą szansę na satysfakcję z obcowania z jej nagraniami mają słuchacze.

Her elegant timbre and unmistakably instrumental way of forming the phrases is unique.’ Few singers have voices that approach the purity of Janowitz’s: with its very fast vibrato and ‘white’ production, the focused sound can soar, swoop and dip with astonishing ease and control, the vocal line becoming almost liquefied into a seemingly endless melisma.

Janowitz’s recorded catalogue, tends to misrepresent the focus of her career because it downplays her work as a recitalist. Of course, she did tape all of Schubert’s songs for high voice but apart from a couple of late song recitals and a disc of Hindemith’s Das Marienleben, that is all we have to remember her by as a performer of song. So this album will be a welcome addition to her discography.

For her Athens recital, Janowitz chose two composers absolutely at the centre of her song repertoire, Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss, with a third, Robert Schumann, forming a bridge between the two.
