Historia powstania tego albumu sięga odległych czasów, kiedy to młody wówczas gitarzysta Knut Reiersrud odbywał trasę koncertową z Dr. Johnem, który pozostaje jedną z najbarwniejszych postaci światowego bluesa. Popularność zyskał na przełomie lat 60. i 70. dzięki nowatorskiemu łączeniu nowoorleańskiego rythm’n’bluesa z psychodelicznym rockiem, urozmaiconych dodatkowo o wystąpienia przypominające ceremonie voodoo.
Trasa koncertowa miała miejsce w 1984 roku, za perkusją w zespole Dr. Johna zasiadł Kieran O'Connor, który tak oto określił styl Vana Morrisona "Voodoo Without Killing Chicken" (Kieran O'Connor miał okazję grać z Vanem Morrisonem).

Jeśli zatem zatem brzydzicie się rytuałów Voodoo, w kształcie takim jak wyglądały one od wieków to trzymajcie się z dala od płyty "Voodoo Without Killing Chicken", mamy tu bowiem pełnowartościową syntezę bluesa, ragtime'u, rock and rolla, swingu, kreolskiej ludyczności i spirituals, czyli nowoorleański amalgamat stylów, tradycji i kultur.

Knut Reiersrud, nazywany skandynawskim Ray'em Cooderem, jest gitarzystą często sięgającym po elementy bluesa, rocka, folku z różnych stron świata czy jazzu.
Świadectwo Reiersrudowi wydali Buddy Guy i Otis Rush ale także wielki innowator gitary Henry Kaiser, z którym nagrał dwie znakomite płyty w połowie lat 90-tych. Wystarczy przypomnieć kilka wyjątkowych płyt, których Reiersrud był pomysłodawcą: "Himalaya Blues" nagrana z nepalską grupą folkową Vajra, "One Drop Is Plenty" z legendarny amerykańskim soulowo-bluesowym wokalistą Mighty Sam Mcclainem czy "Lullabies from the Axis of Evil" z udziałem 26 wokalistek z wielu zakątków świata jak Iranka Mahsa Vahdat wraz z Angielką Sarah Jane Morris, Palestynka Rim Banna z Norweżką Kari Bremnes, Kubanka Martha Lorenzo z Niemką Niną Hagen, Irakijka Halla Bassam z Amerykanką Rickie Lee Jones, by zrozumieć fenomen tego artysty.

David Wallumrod na wszelakich klawiszach (organ, clavinet, fender rhodes, wurlizer, piano), imponująca sekcja instrumentów dętych - Lars Horntveth (Jaga Jazzist, The National Bank) na saksofonach/klarnecie basowym i Matthias Eick (Jaga Jazzist, Manu Katché, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Thomas Dybdahl, Motorpsycho) na trąbce to nie jedyne atuty płyty, kolejne to zniszczony głos lidera i świeżość porywających melodii.
Skład uzupełniają basista Nicolai Eilersten (The National Bank, Lester, Elephant9), gitarzysta Björn Holm i dwóch perkusistów Rune Arnesen (Nils Petter Molvar, Dhafer Youssef, Bugge Wesseltoft, Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat) i Andreas Bye (Bugge Wesseltoft's New Conception of Jazz, Jazzmob, Tore Brunborg, Espen Eriksen Trio).

Nie da się pominąć faktu, że płytę analogowo wyprodukował Christian Engfelt (Cato Salsa Experience, Lionheart Brothers, Serena Maneesh ... ).
"Voodoo Without Killing Chicken" to fantastyczny dojrzały album bardzo dojrzałego mężczyzny!

Do tego wszystko podane z nienaganną audiofilską jakością, no, ale to przecież norweska wytwórnia KKV, która od lat należy do ścisłej czołówki audiofilskich wytwórni płytowych.

It is with unmitigated pleasure that this autumn KKV presents Knut Reiersruds new album with his new band. With our 34 years in the music business we are a pretty mature and composed record company, and we're not easily fazed, but Voodoo Without Killing Chicken makes us 30 years younger and really gets us to move to the beat.
The music was recorded in Oystein Grenis charming and legendary studio Grand Sport Studio in Oslo, with analogue maestro Christian Engfelt (Cato Salsa Experience, Lionheart Brothers, Serena Maneesh etc.) at the controls.
The title of this album came to Reiersrud when he was touring Europe with Dr John in
1984. The good doctors drummer Kieran OConnor had auditioned for Van Morrison, but returned unhappy, calling the style Voodoo Without Killing Chicken. While he disagreed with the reasoning, the young Reiersrud liked the phrasing, and decided that if he ever made an album with New Orleans and soul references, this would be his title.
This album, released on CD and vinyl, features 11 songs, all bearing Reiersrud's distinctive signature, and with six of the lyrics co-authored with Jeff Wasserman. The band is a chapter unto itself - young with loads of experience from well-known Norwegian rock and jazz bands. After accompanying Ann Peebles two and a half years ago at Rockefeller in Oslo, they have played with Reiersrud on a regular basis.
Bjorn Holm has performed with Knut Reiersrud for the last eight years, and as a singer, guitarist and bass player at Knuts concerts. David Wallumrod also performs with Lester and Jarle Bernhoft, and there is no one today who can coax more exciting sounds from a B3 organ on Norwegian records.
Nikolai Hangsle Eilertsen used to be the bass player in Big Bang and also performs with Lester, Elephant9 and National Bank. Andreas Bye took over the drums in Bugge Wesseltoft after Anders Engen, played in Sigurd Kohns band. Rune Arnesen, who has been in and out of Reiersruds projects for 20 years, performs with Dhaffer Yossef, and has been in Nils Petter Molvars various bands. Lars Horntveth, who wrote the wind arrangements, is a multi-instrumentalist from Jaga Jazzist and National Bank, though here he keeps to the sax and bass clarinet. Mathias Eick is a trumpeter with his own solo career, regularly performing with drummer Manu Katche.
This music speaks for itself, but we can unabashedly boast of the warm sound from the Grand Sport Studio and the live feeling, particularly these days when most music is edited - digitally cut and pasted. Here the studio lamp goes red, one, two, three, four and here we go straight on to 24-track tape. And let's face it, Reiersrud has never written better tunes than this!
